Every time I boot, need to switch to the nvidia opengl libraries (opengl-update nvidia), or else all OpenGL apps have an error simmilar to "Could not initialize GL context.", what could be tampering with my default? |

I have the same effect after every 'emerge ...'. _________________ Athlon 64X2 4200+, MSI K8N SLI (nForce4 chipset), 2x512MB DIMM, MSI GeForce 6800 GT |

Both of you: try doing this at a prompt as root, while OpenGL is working.
If OpenGL suddenly breaks, requiring you to do an opengl-update nvidia, then you probably have some other GL libraries hanging around. Here are a few questions for you:
1. Have you ever installed the nvidia drivers without using the ebuild? Their libraries might confuse opengl-update.
2. Have you ever installed any GL libraries other than xfree's and nvidia's (e.g., Mesa)?
3. Do you have any stale versions of nvidia-glx hanging around (look at emerge -pC nvidia-glx)?
I've had a problem before (with another distro), where ldconfig would keep replacing symlinks to GL libraries every time it was run. The solution was to track down any rogue libraries (in my case, they were Mesa 3 compatibility libraries) and remove them from the system. |

I must confess that I tried to install the drivers with nvidias own tools. In the first days of my Gentoo-experience I did that 'cause I didn't knew any better.

Nope. No Mesa or comparable installed.

Not that I knew. I'm using the 1.0.4966 version.

So I will try. Thanx Mike for your advise.
Bye

It was the nvidia-installer that caused all the trouble.
After an
Code: | nvidia-installer --uninstall
emerge nvidia-kernel
emerge nvidia-glx
|
everything works. I did't expect that to be the source of trouble cause it's been a long time since i spoiled my sytsem with that.
NOW IT'S CLEAN AGAIN!!! Thanx _________________ Athlon 64X2 4200+, MSI K8N SLI (nForce4 chipset), 2x512MB DIMM, MSI GeForce 6800 GT |
