PostPosted: Sun May 08, 2022 3:59 am    Post subject: "(EE) no screens found" when running startx Reply with quote

I recently made the choice to join the Gentoo community and try out the operating system my friend talks about all the time. I got a compiled Kernel and every thing but when I'm trying to get a Window Manager I'm always greeted with the fatal error "(EE) no screens found". I have included different outputs I assume are needed.

If anyone can help me with this I'd be super thankful, I've been at it all day

buddy16755,

Welcome to Gentoo

Code:
[   376.473] (II) modesetting: Driver for Modesetting Kernel Drivers: kms
[   376.478] (II) [KMS] drm report modesetting isn't supported.
[   376.478] (EE) open /dev/dri/card0: No such file or directory

You have a bit missing from your kernel.

I think its DRM Support. The ati driver, which you need, needs /dev/dri/card0 to exist.
There is a Radeon Guide on the wiki.
You need the older Radeon driver, not amdgpu.

If that doesn't help, make friends with wgetpaste and share your kernel .config file.

Hi NeedySeagoon,
Thanks for responding!

When I setup the kernel and everything I followed that exact guide because I was aware of me having a Radeon card. I can share my confit but I’m not 100% how I do that if you can tell me I can share that!

Thanks!

Code:
emerge wgetpaste
wgetpaste /usr/src/linux/.config

and post the URL that you get back.

If you followed that guide, check that you are using the kernel you think you are.
The date and time in
Code:
uname -a
is the build date/time of the running kernel.
Is it what you expect or do you have a newer kernel that you should be running?

buddy16755,

You are very close.
Code:
CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE="radeon/R600_rlc.bin"

Code:
ls /lib/firmware/radeon/R600*
/lib/firmware/radeon/R600_me.bin   /lib/firmware/radeon/R600_rlc.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/R600_pfp.bin  /lib/firmware/radeon/R600_uvd.bin

You need all those files. CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE is a space separated list.
The list changes (grows) as drivers develop and the Wiki is always out of date.

Your sound won't work as all the codecs are off
Code:
# CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_REALTEK is not set
# CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_ANALOG is not set
# CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_SIGMATEL is not set
# CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_VIA is not set
# CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_HDMI is not set
# CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_CIRRUS is not set
# CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_CS8409 is not set
# CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_CONEXANT is not set
# CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_CA0110 is not set
# CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_CA0132 is not set
# CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_CMEDIA is not set
# CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_SI3054 is not set

snd_hda_intel is correct for the PCI bus end. The codecs are the output end.
Enable them all until you discover which one you need.

That's all that stands out. I suspect that dmesg will tell you about one missing firmware file an sound not working.

Code:
04:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Inc. and subsidiaries BCM4321 802.11a/b/g/n (rev 05)
   Subsystem: Apple Inc. AirPort Extreme
is missing a driver.
It needs
Code:
CONFIG_SSB_B43_PCI_BRIDGE

That depends on CONFIG_SSB_PCIHOST See https://cateee.net/lkddb/web-lkddb/SSB_B43_PCI_BRIDGE.html
I suspect that its inside the
Code:
# CONFIG_SSB is not set
menu, or at least, its hidden by that option being off.
It doubtless needs firmware too.

So when I run
Code:
ls /lib/firmware/radeon/R600*

my output is
Code:

/lib/firmware/radeon/R600_me.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/R600_pfp.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/R600_rlc.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/R600_uvd.bin

Which if I'm understanding you is what it should output when i run that.

As for the network adapter I've been running it in wired mode and was going to fix that once I got done with the graphics problems.

Would the sound not being enabled cause the startx to fail?

Lastly where would i get the driver for, is that in the link you have attached?
Code:
CONFIG_SSB_B43_PCI_BRIDGE

buddy16755,

Your kernel needs to have those four files listed in EXTRA_FIRMWARE.
Any one missing may be the cause of the missing /dev/dri/card0.
That file is required for startx to work.
None of the /dev entries are real files, they are the kernel exposing and interface to the outside world.

Sound, Wifi and Graphics are all unrelated problems and as you suggest, can be tackled individually.

CONFIG_SSB_B43_PCI_BRIDGE is a kernel configuration option.
See Configuring the kernel for how to search in menuconfig,
Including for hidden options.

buddy16755,

Code:
CONFIG_FB_RADEON=y
CONFIG_FB_RADEON_I2C=y
CONFIG_FB_RADEON_BACKLIGHT=y
if that was there in the earlier config file I missed it.
Those options must be off.

The only safe framebuffer hardware divers today are:
Code:
# CONFIG_FB_VESA is not set
CONFIG_FB_EFI=y
# CONFIG_FB_SIMPLE is not set

as they do not attempt to take ownership of the hardware. All the others, including CONFIG_FB_RADEON, must be off.
The Direct Render Manager driver will own the hardware but it can't if another driver has already claimed it.
The old hardware specific framebuffer drivers are for turn of the millennium hardware.

I suspect being Apple, CONFIG_FB_EFI is correct for you but adding in the other two is harmless.

If you like the Tux logo on the framebuffer boot console, its inside the
Code:
# CONFIG_LOGO is not set
menu.

Hi NeddySeagoon,

Sorry it took me a few days, I changed the framebuffer settings and messed up the kernel and had to redo the system from scratch. Anyway even after doing the rebuild, following the wiki on radeon and this thread I am still getting the same error as shown.

...
[    2.864208] EXT4-fs (sda3): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Opts: (null). Quota mode: none.
...

That was looking good until firmware loading failed.
As firmware loading happens before root is mounted, the needed firmware must be included in the kernel binary.
Alternatively, configure the Radeon driver as a module.
You may need several firmware files, radeon/RV610_pfp.bin, is the first one that failed to load. The kernel does not check for any further radeon related firmware.
There are two
Code:
$ ls /lib/firmware/radeon/RV61*
/lib/firmware/radeon/RV610_me.bin /lib/firmware/radeon/RV610_pfp.bin

Code:
CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE="radeon/R600_rlc.bin radeon/R600_uvd.bin radeon/R600_me.bin radeon/R600_pfp.bin"
CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE_DIR="/lib/firmware"

You may need that firmware but the driver is looking for other files too.

After radeon fails to start, your system continues using
Code:
[    0.829300] efifb: dmi detected iMac8,1 - framebuffer at 0xc0010000 (1680x1050, stride 6912)
[    0.829324] efifb: probing for efifb
[    0.829345] efifb: framebuffer at 0xc0010000, using 7104k, total 7104k

[    0.833763] Console: switching to colour frame buffer device 210x65

which is the EFI Framebuffer console.

Hi,

So i think we are getting closer!! I'm still getting the error but when checking the dmesg, which I've learned is super helpful!! It shows this:
Code:
[    0.654185] [drm] radeon kernel modesetting enabled.
[    0.654234] radeon 0000:01:00.0: vgaarb: deactivate vga console
[    0.654424] [drm] initializing kernel modesetting (RV610 0x1002:0x94C8 0x106B:0x0084 0x00).
[    0.654469] radeon 0000:01:00.0: Invalid PCI ROM header signature: expecting 0xaa55, got 0xd52a
[    0.790878] random: fast init done
[    0.793935] ATOM BIOS: 113
[    0.793962] radeon 0000:01:00.0: VRAM: 128M 0x0000000000000000 - 0x0000000007FFFFFF (128M used)
[    0.793969] radeon 0000:01:00.0: GTT: 512M 0x0000000008000000 - 0x0000000027FFFFFF
[    0.793977] [drm] Detected VRAM RAM=128M, BAR=256M
[    0.793980] [drm] RAM width 64bits DDR
[    0.794013] [drm] radeon: 128M of VRAM memory ready
[    0.794017] [drm] radeon: 512M of GTT memory ready.
[    0.794030] [drm] Loading RV610 Microcode
[    0.794035] Loading firmware: radeon/RV610_pfp.bin
[    0.794038] Loading firmware: radeon/RV610_me.bin
[    0.794041] Loading firmware: radeon/R600_rlc.bin
[    0.794062] radeon 0000:01:00.0: Direct firmware load for radeon/R600_rlc.bin failed with error -2
[    0.794068] r600_cp: Failed to load firmware "radeon/R600_rlc.bin"
[    0.794072] [drm:r600_init] *ERROR* Failed to load firmware!

[    0.801314] radeon: probe of 0000:01:00.0 failed with error -2
[    0.803094] loop: module loaded

But I have verified in my kernel through firmware loading i see all of them are there??
Code:
#
# Firmware loader
#
CONFIG_FW_LOADER=y
CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE="radeon/RV610_pfp.bin radeon/RV610_me.bin radeon/R600_rlc.bin radeon/R600_uvd.bin radeon/R600_pfp.bin radeon/R600_me.bin"
CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE_DIR="/lib/firmware"
# CONFIG_FW_LOADER_USER_HELPER is not set
# CONFIG_FW_LOADER_COMPRESS is not set
CONFIG_FW_CACHE=y
# end of Firmware loader

I find this a little confusing, I ran
Code:
ls /lib/firmware/radeon/R*
just to verify all of those files are correct, and the output of that is:
Code:

/lib/firmware/radeon/R100_cp.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/R200_cp.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/R300_cp.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/R420_cp.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/R520_cp.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/R600_me.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/R600_pfp.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/R600_rlc.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/R600_uvd.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/R700_rlc.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/REDWOOD_me.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/REDWOOD_pfp.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/REDWOOD_rlc.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/REDWOOD_smc.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/RS600_cp.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/RS690_cp.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/RS780_me.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/RS780_pfp.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/RS780_uvd.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/RV610_me.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/RV610_pfp.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/RV620_me.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/RV620_pfp.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/RV630_me.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/RV630_pfp.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/RV635_me.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/RV635_pfp.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/RV670_me.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/RV670_pfp.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/RV710_me.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/RV710_pfp.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/RV710_smc.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/RV710_uvd.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/RV730_me.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/RV730_pfp.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/RV730_smc.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/RV740_smc.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/RV770_me.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/RV770_pfp.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/RV770_smc.bin
/lib/firmware/radeon/RV770_uvd.bin

so the files for sure exist and are being told to load but the kernel seems to error when doing so? Any idea what could be causing it not to properly load?

Here is the Kernel:

OMG I FIGURED IT OUT!!!!

looking closer i noticed
Code:
CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE="radeon/RV610_pfp.bin radeon/RV610_me.bin radeon/R600_rlc.bin radeon/R600_uvd.bin radeon/R600_pfp.bin radeon/R600_me.bin"
contains 2 files with a "_me.bin" and "_pfp.bin" extension, I removed the ones the kernel doesn't ask for aka
Code:
radeon/R600_pfp.bin radeon/R600_me.bin
i recompiled and launched the system, once done it flashed and rerendered on the frambuffer. I ran
Code:
lspci -k
and read the graphics output and it said
Code:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RV610/M74 [Mobility Radeon HD 2400 XT]
    Subsystem: Apple Inc. RV610/M74 [Mobility Radeon HD 2400 XT]
    Kernel driver in use: radeon
the amount of serotonin i got seeing the kernel loaded a driver was insane. I ran startx and it actually launched!!! thank you for the help, I'll mark this as solved!

buddy16755,

There is nothing like following the method and getting the detail right for yourself.
Well done!

Hi, added /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/99-vc4.conf contents on the bottom of the Raspberry pi install guide. Problem solved!
