I am having this exact issue on the same machine. I'm using the minimal install CD. There are a couple of issues:

1 - I can't edit the GRUB menu on this machine. I can press "e", but pressing "Ctrl X" does not work to close out the editing. "F10" does not work because "F10" is not a physical key on this machine - it would be in the "touch bar" but that obviously does not work. An external keyboard (at least the one I currently have) doesn't even register.
2 - I presume the correct edit for the GRUB command would be to add "acpi=off" at the end but thanks to #1 I can't test this.

I'm going to try with the Live GUI.

**Update: I tried with the Live GUI. It boots, but I can't use the trackpad or keypad. It doesn't pick up an external keyboard though it picks up an external mouse. I can navigate around the screen, but then it won't allow me to type anything. It didn't pick up the WiFi device, and without the ability to type I can't configure anything.

**Update 2: I tried Ubuntu Server and Ubuntu Desktop. Neither detects a keyboard, whether that be on the MBP itself, or externally, and they only detect an external mouse, not the trackpad. The issue is with the MBP it seems....

**Update 3: For anyone who comes across this thread in the future, the Mac has a T2 chip which complicates things. There is a specific version of Linux (t2linux dot org) which you can use to set up the MBP to run Ubuntu. I got Noble Numbat running (with the touch bar!) over the weekend.
