My first attempt at a software RAID-0 installation has failed. I have three 40GB drives I am attempting to setup as a RAID-0 array. I followed this guide as closely as possible. The installation from stage1 went well with no hitches. After rebooting, the machine autoloaded my b44 network device module, then attempts to start the RAID array and fails:

* Remounting root filesystem read-only (if necessary)... [OK]
* Checking root filesystem...
Reiserfs super block in block 16 on 0x900 on format 3.6 with standard journal
Blocks (total/free): 28758544/28446903 by 4096 bytes
Filesystem is cleanly unmounted
Filesystem seems mounted read-only. Skipping journal replay.
Checking internal tree..finished.
* Remounting root filesystem read/write... [OK]
* Setting hostname to plato... [OK]
* Calculating module dependencies...
* Using /etc/modules.autoload/kernel-2.4 as config:
* Loading module b44...
* Autoloaded 1 module(s)
* Starting up RAID devices...
* Trying 0... [!!]

* An error occurred during the RAID startup
* Dropping you to a shell; the system will reboot
* when you leave the shell.

What's weird is like others whose posts I've read, I can mount the RAID array, /dev/md/0, from the LiveCD with these steps:

modprobe md
(create an /etc/raidtab)
raidstart /dev/md/0
mount /dev/md/0 /mnt/gentoo

Then I can read and write from the array just fine.

I'll start by posting all of my relevant config files and note any deviations I've tried.

I've tried several combinations in my /etc/fstab. I tried changing the /dev/md/0 line to /dev/md0, /dev/md/2, /dev/md/3. Nothing worked, and I typically got an error during the boot that said it couldn't find a reiserfs on those devices.

I tried adding several things to my kernel line in my grub.conf. I read somewhere that I might want to turn off ACPI, so I appended an "acpi=off", but that promptly froze me on my next boot attempt at:

Calibrating APIC timer...
CPU: 0, clocks: 0, slice = 0

I tried appending more descriptive stuff about my disks with:
md=0,/dev/hda3,/dev/hde3,/dev/hdg3

No change with that.

I'm at a lost for what else to try or what I'm missing. I'm really beat down by this. I started Friday night with the hopes of doing some work on this box Saturday and today. I'm out a weekend, and if I have to scrap my plans for this RAID-0 setup and reinstall, I'm out another week as I don't have much time for this. Sigh. Any ideas?

I'm running the gentoo-sources, 2.4.22-r1, FYI.

Thanks,
Gregg

I should also note my hard drive setup. I have a Promise ATA-100 20267 IDE controller. One drive, /dev/hda, is on one IDE controller on the mobo. The other two drives, /dev/hde and /dev/hdg, are on the Promise IDE controller. I have support for the 20267 controller built in to my kernel as you can see from my config (in there somewhere).

Did you remember to copy your /etc/raidtab into the chroot environment during installation ?
That screwed me up a couple of times.

Have you tried any other kernels ?
I'm running my root partition on /dev/md0 with 2.6.0-test11 (works very nicely)

If there is something wrong with your startup scripts, you could try skipping them by passing "rw init=/bin/bash" to the kernel at boot time.

Pretty sure I copied the raidtab over. I haven't tried any other kernels yet. I've been dodging the 2.6 kernels until we get an official 2.6 kernel, because of a few differences on device support. I have a PVR-250 capture card I need drivers for, and I'm not 100% sure they work from 2.6. While this my own PC, I'm doing some work related stuff that I absolutely need to have working. I'll try skipping the scripts with your tip and if that fails, I'll give a different kernel a shot.

OK, I appended "rw init=/bin/bash" to the kernel line in my grub.conf. When I rebooted, I was given a command prompt and could read and write files to the /dev/md/0. I touched a file named "test" in the /tmp directory. Edited it. Deleted it. Worked.

The output from "df":

Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use Mounted on
/dev/md/0 115030660 1243048 113787612 2% /
none 115030660 1243048 113787612 2% /proc

So what does this mean?

It looks kinda suspicious. Check your /etc/fstab , then try "mount -a".

My "df" looks like this.
Code:
# df

/dev/md0             241079868   6355112 234724756   3% /

As before, I bypass my init scripts with "rw init=/bin/bash" appended to my kernel line in grub.conf. I get the command prompt and can read and write to my RAID-0 drive, /dev/md/0, just fine.

My /etc/fstab is the same as it is above in this thread. When I type "mount -a", I get:

mount: special device /dev/hda1 does not exist

Weird, huh? I have no idea where to go with this other than to start from scratch.

Tried another kernel, 2.6.0-test11. Same thing. I could very well have one or two bad drives. One of the three 40GB drives in this array, I have been using alone for a while. No problems. But the other two have been sitting in the case unused, because I had some problems installing WinXP and Redhat on them a while back.

Nothing ventured, nothing learned I guess. I think I'll pick up a couple 120 or 200GB SATA drives sometime next month and give them a whirl. I will need the space as I'm building a MythTV setup. That's why I was hoping to get my three 40GB drives running under software RAID-0.

Thank you for your help, cyrillic.

Actually, the part I was suspicious about in my previous post was the 120GB of "space" you have in /proc. I'm not sure how that could happen ...

Oh well,
I wish you better luck on your next attempt. :D

Would you believe all I had to do was change /dev/md/0 to /dev/md0 in my /etc/fstab and /etc/raidtab? Yeah, and after I did, it booted up nice and neat! Thanks for your help here, cyrillic, and to the folks on the IRC channel. Finally starting to turn the corner on some of these issues, namely my ignorance.
