Not 100% sure if this should have been stuck in the Multimedia section, but it does seem more of a hardware/instalation/compatability thing
I have a Sony DDU1621 DVD-ROM ATAPI/EIDE drive

I found a script on these forums that lets you test to see if DMA is enabled on your drives, now, i never enabled it, but my CDWriter drive has DMA already enabled on it, so im guessing the kernel is compiled with what i need, its just a matter of enabling it for my DVD Drive?

try
Code:
hdparm -d1 /dev/hdc

replace /dev/hdc with the device of your dvd drive

To make the changes permanent
edit /etc/conf.d/hdparm
and
Code:
rc-update hdparm boot
