gimp and fonts

out of frustration i'm back to the boards.

i'd like to use all 2800 TTF fonts i have DL'ed. but! gimp dosn't seem to like these files. so, i've emerged ttf2pt1 to cover them to a useable pfd file format. my question is this, will all of the directories that fonts belong in, no matter where i put then, no matter how many times i've started my computer and X, gimp REFUSES to use them. i've read and read and read, and i've been on this for about 7 hours. can someone please show me the light. i beg you!

Did you add the path to you XF86Config file?

that path the the font files are in, yes.

In the Gimp
Go to Preferences on the sidebar Folders -> Fonts

Add the appropriate directories. I doubt this has anything to do with xft and X.

ok i'm not seeing a folders or fonts option on the side there.

Are you running 1.2? That is definitely in 1.3.
