After having some problems with getting KDE to start I am wondering whether the fact that I did not change my make.conf until a few hours after I started the emerge has affected my installation of kde. When I log in I start xfree and not kde (i.e. one white command window on a teal background). Is this a likely reason for my problem. Just wanted to make sure whether there were any other explanations for my problems before I start another 60+ hour compile. In advance let me say that I apprecaite all of your help.

That may have caused the problem, what changes did you made? and what error are you getting?

After emerge kde I got a message
IMPORTANT: 49 config files in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb need updating
IMPORTANT: 2 config files in /usr/kde/3.1/share/config need updating

I follow recomendation emerge --help config, but it resolve problems with /etc/ tree only. KDE not started :( . What should I do to update this configs?

Code:
etc-update

If you never touched the kde configuration previously, you can just replace all files with the new version

I got kde started with starkde command. I get a lot of errors but kde seems to be working flawlessly albeit its sluggishness. Some of the errors I get are:
Xlib extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
and at another part it tells me that it cannot find my own hostname and my system is seriously misconfigured
