I dunno why but... eh... openoffice didn't merge. I wasn't too upset since I had heard it was a bear but I was curious if it would "just work" with no tinkering. When it didn't I tried the openoffice-bin install and... no dice. Here's the error:

Code:
# emerge openoffice-bin-1.1.0.ebuild
Calculating dependencies ...done!
>>> emerge (1 of 1) app-office/openoffice-bin-1.1.0 to /
>>> md5 src_uri ;-) OOo_1.1.0_LinuxIntel_install.tar.gz
>>> Unpacking source...
>>> Unpacking OOo_1.1.0_LinuxIntel_install.tar.gz to /var/tmp/portage/openoffice-bin-1.1.0/work
>>> Source unpacked.

>>> Install openoffice-bin-1.1.0 into /var/tmp/portage/openoffice-bin-1.1.0/image/ category app-office
 * Installing OpenOffice.org into build root...
glibc version: 2.3.2

Initializing installation program....................

!!! ERROR: app-office/openoffice-bin-1.1.0 failed.
!!! Function src_install, Line 93, Exitcode 1
!!! The setup program failed

It's probably something stupid but I didn't seem to see this exact error anywhere in the forums.

Had the same problem, so I downloaded it from www.openoffice.org and installed it. Though, merging it would provide more performance.

I haven't a clue. I downloaded it from openoffice.org too and for the life of me cannot figure out what to run to start anything. I didn't give it a lot of thought or time though... but still. I tried running "swriter" for instance and just... nothing.

Make sure /root/.sversionrc and /root/openoffice (or similar) absolutely do not exist. They will cause the emerge to choke.

Don't run OOo as root either, it messes things up quite badly.

Read the documentation on openoffice.org, it's explained well.
