Hi, my current laptop died and I’m looking for new one.
I’m looking for something with:
- 15.6”, non-glare, at least FHD display,
- Ryzen 5 APU,
- at least 16GB ram, max 32GB,
- keyboard with numpad and backlight,
- two slots for storage, I don’t care if it’s SATA, m.2 SATA or m.2 PCIe.

It will be used mostly for simple stuff like listening music, watching movies, maybe some older games (OpenMW, OpenTTD etc.). Also, most of the time it will be laying on my lap or bed, so I need it to survive this (I won’t be compiling anything in these conditions).

I found two that nearly (support only up to 24GB of ram) fits:
Acer Aspire 5 (NX.A84EP.00E)
Lenovo ThinkPad E15 G2 (20T8004LPB)

Acer has newer CPU (5500U vs 4500U) and my laptop was also Acer, so I’m accustomed to this clickable touchpad. On the other hand Lenovo looks sturdier and has LEDs for capslock and numlock, and probably has better Linux support.

Anyone here is using any of those models, similar models or something that fits my requirements and can tell how it’s working with Gentoo?

I have a Lenovo laptop that works just fine with Gentoo. It's not a thinkpad, it's a few years old, but it's a relatively late model. I'm not in the building where it is. But anyway, I've put Gentoo on Lenovo/IBM laptops with no issues. Can't speak to the Acer.

I have a lenovo thinkpad p14s 2gen and I am happy with it, all the hadware is supported, the only defect is the performance at compile time which I still haven't figured out why it is a bit disappointing.

I don't know to what degree this was or remains an issue, but something to look into:

New Lenovo AMD Laptops With Pluton Co-Processor Reportedly Only Boot Windows By Default (July)

Pluton is a Microsoft thing.

Other articles from around that time indicated that both Intel and Dell were not going to support Pluton. I think Intel claimed to have a better supported solution (PTT, part of Intel Management Engine).

(I primarily use a Lenovo T470, which replaced another T model. I also have some other used models. The T470 may be my last.)

This problem is about Ryzen 6000, those two laptops have Ryzen 5000. Today I found same laptop, but with different CPU on linux-hardware.org [1], everything looks good, so I ordered it, and it should arrive in two days.

I don't see a reference to Ryzen 5000, but I haven't looked into the issue other than being generally aware of it. I only wanted to bring it up in case anyone hadn't heard about it.

It doesn't:

Thus by default only Microsoft Windows will boot with the default firmware configuration on some new Lenovo laptops.

That addresses the immediate issue, not necessarily firmware updates or Microsoft's plans for the feature. For me, this is a situation where past performance seems to be a strong indicator of future results.

Hi, recently I bought MSI modern 15 with ryzen 5700. There is also a 5500u version.
It comes with 8gb of ram by default, but has two slots. 32gb max. Two m.2 slots. Thermals are good, it has 2 fans (i'm compiling gcc at the moment, 3,5ghz on all cores, 85C )
There is an application named isw, to adjust baterry threshold and fan speed. Display is ok for me, also it has backlight keyboard, on the other hand speakears are awfull:)
S2idle works, but I had to write a service, that cats /proc/acpi/button/lid/LID0/state to make it recognize lid status ,and on 5.19 kernel enable PINCTRL_AMD.
You can even play witcher 3(720p, but with FSR it look's good). Battery has 53Wh.

p.s. sorry for my english, not a native speaker
