So my laptop's wifi card needs kernel > 5.17 for the appropriate firmware/drivers. What is the best approach to installing gentoo on this machine? Can I just build kernel 5.19.8 with genkernel on my other laptop and replace the live USB versions of the kernel and initramfs (/boot/gentoo + gentoo.igz)? If so will I need to make sure image.squashfs contains the appropriate complied modules? |

Welcome to Gentoo,
and why not using LAN just for install?
you can use almost any kind of Live ISO to install Gentoo, AFAIK.
Use current Manjaro or Endeavour OS. (i installed ungoogled-chromium and watched Netflix while installing Gentoo)
Take your time, follow the handbook and enjoy Gentoo.

BraniggansLaw,
Welcome to Gentoo.
Any Linux boot media that meets your needs can be used to install Gentoo. None of its code goes into your install.
Non Gentoo boot media will be missing the /mnt/gentoo mount point but fixes that.
You can even use another Linux install to install Gentoo.
-- edit --
WiFi needs a lot more than just a kernel and firmware, so fixing the liveCD is not really an option.
Sneakernet still works though.
The general idea is sound but the detail has changed from that 16 year old post. _________________ Regards,
