Posted: Sat Oct 22, 2022 5:32 am Post subject: [SOLVED] runlevel 3 console blanking vs xfce4-screensaver |
|
|
I boot to runlevel 3, then login and do a 'startxfce4' to get
the desktop. I've configured the xfce4-screensaver to have
generous times, 25/45/60, but it's only about 5 or 10mins
before the screen goes to black.
It's not even getting to the screensaver animations, it just
goes straight to black. I assume that that is the console blanking,
from where I started 'startxfce4', kicking in.
I've tried doing a 'setterm -blank 0' before doing 'startxfce4'
to turn the blanking off, but it had no effect.
Any ideas?

Please pastebin the X.org log after the display goes off. Just in case.
Can you also test if the display goes blank outside X? Does it have the same delay? _________________ ..: Zucca :..

good idea....
full screen console, not logged in - 10+ mins - no blanking
full screen console, logged in - 10+ mins - no blanking
logged in with xfce4 running, blanking occurs at 10mins, though the xfce4-screensaver
is set at 25/45/60, when blanking occurs at 10mins and if I wait until 30+mins have elapsed,
if I move the mouse the minimum, about a nanometer , blanking will stop and I will see
the xfce4-screensaver's floating mice running...
which indicates to me that, possibly, the monitor, a Dell UP2720Q, might be blanking on its
own, which seems odd. I've looked in the monitor's manual and there's no indication that
it's capable of blanking on its own.
here's the log file, but a new one hasn't been generated in weeks, though the problem
occurs all the time...

Xorg detected your mouse at device /dev/input/mice.
Please check your config if the mouse is still not
operational, as by default Xorg tries to autodetect
the protocol.

One further thing, if I install and run 'xscreensaver' instead of the
'xfce4-screensaver' I don't have this problem, but that also starts
'systemd-screensaver' (?), which I then have to manually kill.
For this particular gentoo installation, I have decided to try and go
pure xfce4.

The solution is, for me, add 'xset -dpms' to
xfce4 Settings --> Session and Startup --> Application Autostart
