New install dwm loads but nothing else.......

On a fresh gentoo install I am trying to add xorg and dwm. Following the handbook I have created an .xinitrc and the install will boot into dwm. But once into a minimal dwm I am not able to anything. I am not able to load st terminal, nor access any applications via dmenu. In the install if I try to install any application (like firefox-bin or st I get an error "can't find display". I know something is going on with the environmental variable "display" but I am not sure what to do at this time
