Heres the situation: I have 2 systems networked together. The computer with Gentoo on it is also dual booting Windows XP & the one doing the routing for the other system using Windows internet connection sharing. I, for the life of me can't figure out & get ICS working through Gentoo. I've read a ton of posts on this, along with several other websites relating to iptables and IP masquerading. I've tried several different things, but really cant make heads or tails of it. I'll admit I am defiantely in the dark when it comes to networking in linux....even basic stuff. I'm pretty sure I have everything needed that needs to be in the kernel (2.6-test11-r2)....I got at least that much out of what I've read so far. Just setting it up has me all confused.
I have cable service & my gentoo box has 2 onboard NICs. Cat5 coming from the modem to to the one card (eth0), and going from card 2 (eth1) into a hub......and from there, going upstairs to the other computer. Everything works flawlessly when I'm in Windows, but I wan to be able to share the connection when I'm in gentoo so my wife still has internet access.
I'm not even sure if I have the /etc/hosts or /etc/conf.d/net correct to do this properly or if I have to add eth1 to the default runlevel as well (if I do, it fails to start....both NICs are 100% supported by the kernel...RTL8139 & Intel Pro1000). They are both properly detected also.
If someone could please help me out and maybe just give me a simple run through of it because the docs at linuxdocs.org and the others are a bit over my head. I really need to get this working ....or my wife WILL have my head .
Thanks a ton,
