Hello everyone,

I'm new to getnoo ...

I guess those 1st 2 lines are pretty common here :)

I tried to emerge @world several times, but no joy. I even emerged @world with an -empty-tree flag, but still I get another error. both are actually because the needed binary is missing from the /bin directory. I think portage is missing something about the new file hierarchy after the merge.

This is the error message;

The log is quiet big, but I'll attach it later if needed. However I assume the 1st log gives an idea about the problem. I've made a few searches about the usr merge, and the problems that come with it but didn't find something that helps. Perhaps you would.

Thanks.

Hi

/bin/ln is provided by coreutils package
Code:
$ equery b /bin/ln
 * Searching for /bin/ln ...
sys-apps/coreutils-8.32-r1 (/bin/ln)

Demo,

Welcome to Gentoo.
We were all new once.

Which stage3 did you use in your install?
Your selected profile is
Code:
default/linux/amd64/17.1/desktop/gnome/systemd/merged-usr

That's OK if you followed the migration news item, which will not be published until 01-Dec-22, or you used a stage3 with mergedusr in its name.
Not doing one of those things will lead to problems.

The migration News Item has been posted to the gentoo-dev mailing list for comment.

The profile and stage3 need to match as far as merged-usr goes.

Did you lose your /bin -> usr/bin symlink somehow? It should be present on all merged usr systems (same for lib/lib64/sbin), unless migration hasn't been done properly (e.g. using merged-usr profile without merging usr first) or something else unexpected went wrong (whole thing is kinda new and aimed at testers until news are published). If it's a new install, should use the right stage3 as noted above.

Thank you for the replies everyone, and thank you for the welcome NeddySeagoon!

Yes I agree with you sabayonino, I've been a debian user for 14 yesrs, and I'm aware the binary comes from coreutils, but portage somehow didn't update the $PATH, and the ld.cache so the compiler would find everything it needs while working.

I checked on whether the file was there, and it was, but on /usr.

I also wanted to mention that part of the systemd build log with the final error message;
Code:
>>> Merging sys-apps/systemd-251.7 to /
 * "/bin" and "/usr/bin" are not merged.
 * One of them should be a symbolic link to the other one.
 * "/sbin" and "/usr/sbin" are not merged.
 * One of them should be a symbolic link to the other one.
 * "/lib" and "/usr/lib" are not merged.
 * One of them should be a symbolic link to the other one.
 * Migration to system layout with merged directories must be performed before
 * rebuilding sys-apps/systemd with USE="-split-usr" to avoid run-time breakage.
 * ERROR: sys-apps/systemd-251.7::gentoo failed (preinst phase):
 *   System layout with split directories still used

Which still moves with the main idea; portage missed something about the new system hierarchy.

I used the Nov 14 stage 3 build NeddySeagoon "tage3-amd64-desktop-systemd-20221114T111652Z.tar.xz", which amazingly disappeared from everywhere it seems.

I "eselect profile set 8" which is this one, yes. If I only knew that about the stage name or the news to come beforehand I sure would have followed. The problem is that there was no satge3 flie with that name. I guess someone should have placed a small note in the install handbook. I've read it a-z.

The systemd error note disagrees with you Ionen, both /bin, and /usr/bin do seem to still coexist. I guess the problem is what NeddySeagoon mentioned that the stage3 file itself has to be a merge-usr file from the start. Even until now, that file doesn't exist yet. You have a choice between openrc and systemd, and llvm and clang, no merge-usr yet.

My concern is that if this is the new system hierarchy gentoo is going to adopt in 6 months, a pointer should be put in the installation handbook.

But either way, what do you think? Should I just add the USE flag mentioned in the systemd error message to make.conf? Or just drop the merge-usr for now, and wait until a stage3 with preset merge-usr comes out?

Thank you all!

Demo,

Code:
"/bin" and "/usr/bin" are not merged.
is a hint.
stage3-amd64-desktop-systemd-20221114T111652Z.tar.xz does not have mergedusr in its name.

That means the profile you have selected is not suitable for your install.

Choose a systemd profile without merged-usr in its name, so it matches the rest of your system.
I'm not sure if that will just work. I don't use systemd

If it does, wait for the news item to be published, then follow it.

At https://www.gentoo.org/downloads/ under Advanced choices and other architectures, there are merged usr stage3 tarballs, like https://bouncer.gentoo.org/fetch/root/all/releases/amd64/autobuilds/20221122T220204Z/stage3-amd64-nomultilib-systemd-mergedusr-20221122T220204Z.tar.xz

Thank you for the advice and the link NeddySeagoon!

It's strange there's a different stage for merge usr now, I didn't find one for that release I have ...

I tried the script however and it seems to have worked, but not the USE flag alone.

I still can't confirm the whole installation is a success, I still to install gnome, will follow up with details.

Can I ask about gcc optimization flags in here or should I start another thread?

Also another thing, I'm used to brewing my own packages on debian, and was wondering if you could point out resources for me to do the same with gentoo ...

Thank you!

Demo,

The autobuilds used for installs are updated approximately weekly. Gentoo is a rolling release. You need to roll with it.
Changes (updiates) are published every 30 minutes but monthly updates for a testing system or quarterly for a stable system are mostly OK.
If you don't keep up to date, after a year or more, you will learn things about gentoo that you can lean no other way.

Unlike Debian, Gentoo is not a distro. Its a toolkit you use to design and install you own distro. Gentoo is the ::gentoo ebuild repository and the portage package manager. Everything else is ${UPSTREAM}.

The Gentoo way of rolling your own, is with ebuilds and USE flags. Many are provided. Overlays provide many more.
You can start your own overlay, either on your local system is publish it for others to use.
If there is an ebuild that does almost, but not quite what you want, change it. Some overlays are listed but there are many more.
Quality and bit rot varies.

You can use the traditional manual build technique too but take great care that everything installed that way is installed to /usr/local and not the main filesystem which is owned and managed by portage. Portage will not install a package that creates a file name 'collision'. A manual
Code:
make install
can damage your install.
The reference for ebuild creation is the Gentoo devmanual. Its a reference, not light reading, so it may make your eyes glaze over.

You should start a new topic for a new question. The helpers here may not be able to help with new questions. New helpers may miss a new question buried in an existing topic.
There is a canned search for unanswered posts to make them easy to find.
