ok. so I've been reading a TON, mainly this link

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1110144-start-0.html

and this link

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1115448-start-0.html

and to be honest i've come accross so many different instructions and variation of how my make.conf file should look, particularly in the VIDEO_CARDS declaration. I initially had just "intel iris" then i had "intel i965 iris" but i feel like i change so many things too much so its hard to follow now. given this i've settled on following this link to thie T

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1110144-start-0.html

but i am getting humg up literally on step 1 (LOL) by:

Code:

!!! The ebuild selected to satisfy "media-libs/mesa" has unmet requirements.
- media-libs/mesa-22.2.3::gentoo USE="X d3d9 gles2 llvm proprietary-codecs unwind vaapi vulkan wayland zstd -debug -gles1 -lm-sensors -opencl -osmesa (-selinux) -test -valgrind -vdpau -vulkan-overlay -xa -xvmc -zink" ABI_X86="(64) -32 (-x32)" CPU_FLAGS_X86="sse2" VIDEO_CARDS="-d3d12 (-freedreno) -intel (-lima) -nouveau (-panfrost) -r300 -r600 -radeon -radeonsi (-v3d) (-vc4) -virgl (-vivante) -vmware"

  The following REQUIRED_USE flag constraints are unsatisfied:
    d3d9? ( any-of ( video_cards_intel video_cards_r300 video_cards_r600 video_cards_radeonsi video_cards_nouveau video_cards_vmware ) )

  The above constraints are a subset of the following complete expression:
    d3d9? ( any-of ( video_cards_intel video_cards_r300 video_cards_r600 video_cards_radeonsi video_cards_nouveau video_cards_vmware ) ) vulkan? ( video_cards_radeonsi? ( llvm ) ) vulkan-overlay? ( vulkan ) video_cards_radeon? ( x86? ( llvm ) amd64? ( llvm ) ) video_cards_r300? ( x86? ( llvm ) amd64? ( llvm ) ) video_cards_radeonsi? ( llvm ) xa? ( X ) xvmc? ( X ) zink? ( vulkan )

i don't understand how. here is my make.conf

Code:
# These settings were set by the catalyst build script that automatically
# built this stage.
# Please consult /usr/share/portage/config/make.conf.example for a more
# detailed example.
COMMON_FLAGS="-march=native -O2 -pipe"

never understood why it says can't find screen

regarding my display. i am fully booted into gentoo tty and i am running a 1920X1080 resolution on this tty. i have accomplished this by changing the resolution in /etc/default/grub

i feel like im spinning around my own self at this point. my goal is to run X with windo manager like dwm or awesome.

also there is a relevent portion of dmesg
Code:

[    0.788057] Linux agpgart interface v0.103
[    0.788231] i915 0000:00:02.0: Your graphics device 46a6 is not properly supported by the driver in this
               kernel version. To force driver probe anyway, use i915.force_probe=46a6
               module parameter or CONFIG_DRM_I915_FORCE_PROBE=46a6 configuration option,
               or (recommended) check for kernel updates.

luckySimba,

please give us the output of "emerge --info".

For the moment I can confirm you will need (only) for your new intel cpu and integrated gpu in your make.conf:
Code:
VIDEO_CARDS="intel"

... not more ... not less ...

Then check with "eselect profile list" your current profile; you will see a * on your recent profile.

Maybe - depending what you have now - you should set it to:
Quote:
[5] default/linux/amd64/17.1/desktop (stable)

or wait for a comment from us.

Also, please delete these use-flags from USE=... (for the moment):

wayland vaapi vulkan -systemd -gnome -qt4 -ldap -ios alder lake graphics xephyr xnest initramfs gallium d3d9 vaapi

(if you dont have a systemd it is not necessary to exclude it with a minus; the same with gnome ... some other useflags doesnt exists ;-) )

and delete your package.use settings.

and do a first "emerge -uNDv @world" (or wait until we have checked your profile setting).

You must set also an additionally kernel command line parameter: i915.force_probe=46a6

(If you do it in grub you must do a grub-mkconfig afterwards).

getting a similar error in emerge

You are very welcome ! :D

I see you have switched from "default/linux/amd64/17.1" to desktop profile. This is fine (if you had some "special" profiles before then it could be a little bit more difficult). You can see now you have much more use-flags enabled automatically. This is Gentoo !

I see also you have a stable system (ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="amd64"). This is also very fine.

I see you are working with "dmesg" and logfiles (e.g. from X11) ... this is the best way to learn your system. (IMHO Gentoo is the best Linux to become a "real" Linux expert 8) ). You are on the best way.

I had pleased you to remove some use-flags because we try to get a minimal working system. THEN we can build up with all you want / need (I have seen the other thread with wifi; I am sure you will get a great expert for this also).

Please dont forget i915.force_probe=46a6

Without you will get NO access to your GPU ... and X11 cannot do anything then.

and yes, im trying to put in my hours, i love linux and i figure i move on to gentoo once and for all after using arch for a long time

here is what happens when i aded the i915 to my kernel blobs

Code:

 SYNC    include/config/auto.conf.cmd
  DESCEND objtool
  CALL    scripts/atomic/check-atomics.sh
  CALL    scripts/checksyscalls.sh
  CHK     include/generated/compile.h
  UPD     include/generated/compile.h
  CC      init/version.o
  AR      init/built-in.a
make[4]: *** No rule to make target '/lib/firmware/i915.force_probe=46a6', needed by 'drivers/base/firmware_loader/builtin/i915.force_probe=46a6.gen.o'.  Stop.
make[4]: *** Waiting for unfinished jobs....
  UPD     drivers/base/firmware_loader/builtin/i915.force_probe=46a6.gen.S
make[3]: *** [scripts/Makefile.build:552: drivers/base/firmware_loader/builtin] Error 2

make[1]: *** [scripts/Makefile.build:552: drivers/base] Error 2

the driver is in /lib/firmware/i915

Yes 8)

:lol:

Do you want to work with or without an initramfs ?

See this in your syslog:

Code:
[    0.000000] Command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-5.15.80-gentoo root=/dev/nvme0n1p3 ro acpi_backlight=native root=/dev/nvme0n1p3
...
[    0.673626] Initramfs unpacking failed: compression method gzip not configured

This means:

1. You dont have added this PARAMETER to your kernel command line:

Code:
[    0.788280] i915 0000:00:02.0: Your graphics device 46a6 is not properly supported by the driver in this
               kernel version. To force driver probe anyway, use i915.force_probe=46a6
               module parameter or CONFIG_DRM_I915_FORCE_PROBE=46a6 configuration option,
               or (recommended) check for kernel updates.

2. And you dont have enabled this - but you need it also:
Code:
General setup  --->
    [*]   Support initial ramdisk/ramfs compressed using gzip
    Built-in initramfs compression mode (Gzip)  --->

If you dont want to use an initramfs then please inform also @grknight in your other thread about your missing initramfs.

I just enabled that per his recommendations and rebuilt kernel and grub-mkconfig as well as forced Dracut :(

Maybe a hint to grub: You must ALWAYS configure grub after every change ...

Here is a list of commands for changing the current kernel:
Code:
root #mount /boot
root #cd /usr/src/linux
root #make menuconfig
root #make -j 8
root #make install
root #make modules_install
root #grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
root #umount /boot
root #reboot

This means, you are not booting the kernel you think you boot ... Have you missed any commands ? ... mount /boot ? (Then you actual kernel is on a wrong place). Had you any errors ?

Ok. Do another kernel configuration. Add

i915.force_probe=46a6

into

Code:
Processor type and features  --->
    [*] Built-in kernel command line
    (acpi_backlight=native root=/dev/nvme0n1p3 i915.force_probe=46a6) Built-in kernel command string

Do all steps ... and reboot ... and check:

Code:
# cat /proc/cmdline

Dude. I am a complete idiot. The whole time I’ve not been make install my kernel. I finally got x running after having to do several other things. I think I should be entered into the n00b hall of shame. Anyway thank you for your patience with me and all of your help my man. I can’t tell you what it means to me. Hopefully someday I’ll be able to pay it forward.
