I'm trying to do a very simple installation of Postfix on my desktop computer for local delivery of local system messages only. Emerging Postfix fails at the configuration stage, with a fairly unhelpful error (full build output see below):

Code:
make -f Makefile.in MAKELEVEL= Makefiles
(echo "# Do not edit -- this file documents how Postfix was built for your machine."; /bin/sh makedefs) >makedefs.tmp
ATTENTION:
ATTENTION: Not supported: building with LD_LIBRARY_PATH
ATTENTION:
make: *** [Makefile.in:33: Makefiles] Error 1
make: *** [Makefile:22: makefiles] Error 2

I'm guessing that I'm missing something obvious but, for the life of me, I'm not seeing it.

I'm guessing that I'm missing something obvious but, for the life of me, I'm not seeing it.

What exact command are you using to get this result?

Are you installing this as a root login shell by either :
  • Login as root in a terminal
  • Using sudo -i
  • Using su --login (--login also can be -l or just -)

Certainly feels like environment poisoning with LD_LIBRARY_PATH being set in the shell.

I had been running the emerge command after running "sudo -s" from an xterm, logged in initially as a normal user. To check things out, I tried logging in as root on a terminal; I also tried "su -l" and "sudo -i" logged in as a normal user. The results in each case are exactly the same.

...But I see that you're right concerning the environment poisoning: when I unset LD_LIBRARY_PATH, everything installs fine. Thanks a bundle for pointing me in the right direction!

Setting LD_LIBRARY_PATH in a general purpose shell is unusual. Why do you have that set, and to what value?

I certainly don't remember setting it, and the value makes no sense, as it points to a (now) non-existent directory. (Indeed, there's not even a directory with a similar name.)

echo $LD_LIBRARY_PATH
LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/usr/lib32/opengl/nvidia/lib

With further investigation, it's set in the env.d directory in a file named 99steam created in March 2015. That file contains two lines:

AUDIODRIVER=alsa
LD_LIBRARY_PATH="$LD_LIBRARY_PATH:/usr/lib32/opengl/nvidia/lib"

Up until I tried installing Postfix, the errant LD_LIBRARY_PATH value had never created any problems that I'm aware of.... Looks like maybe I was trying to solve some problem with Steam in 2015 and forgot I'd done it?

Yes. I seem to recall that Steam's library bundling has led to a number of strange hacks over the years to try to get it to behave.
