|

Hi guys.
Sometime ago I repartitioned my drive and encrypted everything except boot and EFI partition. I was using gentoo-kernel + dracut until then, but for some reason I was unable to make it boot after encryption. My current partition scheme is:
Code: |
nvme0n1 259:0 0 232.9G 0 disk
├─nvme0n1p1 259:1 0 512M 0 part (EFI vfat partition)
├─nvme0n1p2 259:2 0 1.7G 0 part (boot ext4 partition)
└─nvme0n1p3 259:3 0 230.7G 0 part
└─root 254:0 0 230.7G 0 crypt /
|
In the end I just used genkernel which generates usable initrd image (genkernel --luks all) that asks me for password on the boot. Now I want to go back gentoo-kernel (or gentoo-kernel-bin). I see that genkernel is not recommended unless the kernel itself is build with it as well, so I wanted to revert to dracut.
My dracut.conf.d/custom.conf looks like this:
Code: |
omit_dracutmodules+=" systemd systemd-initrd dracut-systemd i18n systemd-udevd "
add_dracutmodules+=" dm crypt fstab-sys udev-rules "
filesystems+=" ext4 "
early_microcode="no"
use_fstab="yes"
add_fstab+=" /etc/fstab "
hostonly="yes"
compress="gzip"
add_device+=" /dev/mapper/root "
|
I just emerge gentoo-kernel-bin with initramfs USE enabled. I tried all possible combinations for kernel boot parameteres: rd.luks.uuid=<UUID>, rd.luks.uuid=luks-<UUID>, with and without root=<UUID> etc. even including custom kernel command line parameter for the dracut/initramfs image itself, but every time the same: it says something like "luksOpen nvme0n1p3". I enter the password, press Enter and that's it. Cursor blinks, nothing happens.
My emerge --info:
Code: |

No grub?
If you have grub then
Code: |
/etc/default/grub --->>>>
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="cryptdevice=/dev/nvme0n1p3:root root=/dev/mapper/root rootfstype=ext4"
|
Code: |
/etc/crypttab ---->>>
root /dev/nvme0n1p3 none luks,initramfs
|
In dracut.conf these
Code: |
omit_dracutmodules+=" systemd systemd-initrd dracut-systemd i18n systemd-udevd "
early_microcode="no"
hostonly="yes"
compress="gzip"
|
are sufficient.
Enable dmcrypt@boot (and maybe lvm?) rebuild dracut initramfs and update grub.
Better have grub built with USE="device-mapper" _________________

alamahant, it works! Thank you, thank you.
I have Grub. I played with kernel boot parameters, but the result was the same.
I was missing /etc/crypttab. Dm-crypt service was already enabled, because it automatically mounts my HDD (also encrypted). So adding crypttab as per your instruction, regenerating initramfs with dracut and updating Grub solved it for me.
Updating grub_cmdline_linux was not even required, because dracut automatically puts all the parameters inside initramfs. |
