PostPosted: Tue Jan 31, 2023 6:46 am    Post subject: Pulseaudio 16.1 fail error 28: not enough bandwidth [SOLVED] Reply with quote

Since I moved to pulseaudio years ago, the saga of pulseaudio fails for me is long and epic. (and i am not the only one)

Most times I let it pass, until the next reboot or new update comes along and then magically gets fixed.

Some of my previsouly documented times:

Alsa, pulseaudio, skype, flash not working (solved)
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-994678-highlight-pulseaudio.html

Sound on all devices lost: Pulseaudio 15 (solved)
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-8692554-highlight-.html#8692554

Alsasound: error: failed to import hw (not solved atm and this is the last problem)
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1160073-highlight-.html

At the moment, I dont really know what to look for because, sometimes the main card, (audagy) fails to show up on pavucontrol but I wait a little bit and then magically shows up and I get sound again. Other times I have to reboot.
I have even opened pavucontrol without it and while looking at it, I i see it coming on to it or... vanish.

The current problem is with my 046d:0a5b Logitech, Inc. G933 Wireless Headset Dongle

It was working well one day after the next reboot, went dead silent.
It is not a hardware issue because I tested it on another gentoo system and the usb ports where the receiver is, all work.

Right now I cannot even get sound with aplay on it.
This means that not even alsa is working for this card.

Then there is pavucontrol overriding my setup and turning on cards that I turn off.
and... of course alsamixer not saving/restoring previous sound levels because pulseaudio raising them all the time.

This time, it is this card that fails and I am out of ideas.

Code:

Logitech, Inc. QuickCam Pro 9000 at usb-0000:00:1d.7-4, high speed
4 [H]: USB-Audio - Logitech G933 Gaming Wireless H
Logitech Logitech G933 Gaming Wireless H at usb-0000:00:1a.7-5.4, full speed

... and I cannot get any sound with it.

There is a 4 letter word to describe pulseaudio. That word should be added to a disclaimer to be included with the install files, so that we know what we are dealing with from start.

I'd recommend looking at pipewire.

It can emulate pulseaudio, but it integrates better with bluetooth, and has connections to gstreamer.
You can also use alsa by way of wireplumber, all from pipewire

The USB dongle is wifi but i will keep the recomendation in mind.

Today I tried a few more things.
- Removed all alsa related software
- Removed all pulseaudio related software
- Removed all pavucontrol related software
- Rebooted
- Re-installed it all plus Paprefs

Still no go. However, I can see some things:
- The USB Logitech G933 Gaming Wireless does capture sound and produces its own captured sound. If i speak to the mic i can hear myself on it.
- For some reason it does not output sound from any other card or source
- Now, when I selectc it on pavucontrol, it freezes any video media player and does not output any sound.
- Randonmly it populates pavucountrol as an output but never outputs anything.

The problem feels like some default configuration seems to been a tweak.
Perhaps Using a specific ALSA device as PulseAudio sink/source ?

Also, the wiki tutorial is outdated:
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/PulseAudio

Your pactl list modules reports module.version = "15.0" which does not match your eix search - are you sure you are running the installed version?

Please pastebin emerge --info and pa-info

EDIT: was a typo, last script is named pa-info not pa-info.sh

Please also pastebin contents of /etc/asound.conf and ~/.asoundrc if these exist.

I just updated the paste file on my previous post. 15.0 was previously and I forgot to update it.

"16.1" https://pastebin.com/raw/Asc1WDqn

pa-info.sh does not exist

~/.asoundrc and /etc/asound.conf do not exist.

I also do not use modules. All drivers are static as they have always been

Thanks for pa-info output.

Using flat-volumes = yes in daemon.conf can be problematic, hope you did that knowing what you are doing. This should not affect your G933 issue though as far as I can tell but we probably get to this later.

Please do this test to verify alsa works for G933: pasuspender -- speaker-test -D front:CARD=H,DEV=0 -t wav -c 2
This should suspend pulseaudio and let speaker-test access alsa hardware directly.

When using sound server (either pulseaudio or pipewire sound server) card volume levels are managed by sound server. Alsa save/restore script still works but as you noted it's state is getting overriden by sound server state.

Regarding cards turning on and off. This is a feature of pulseaudio managed by module-switch-on-port-available - if you do not need any automagic switching, just disable the module in /etc/pulse/default.pa

If you want automagic switching to ports becoming available but want some of your cards stay locked to off profile or maybe any other profile, you can do that too. In pavucontrol Configuration tab you need to select the desired profile for the card and then click on lock button (which says Lock card to this profile) and card profile will not change automagically anymore. This is most useful for HDMI/DP displays popping out of off profile when monitor gets turned on.

Yes i changed it to test something and will revert.

It does suspend but I can confirm that alsa is not working well for this device and i have doubts if my intel card is also having the same issue.

I also have this alsa problem:
Alsasound: error: failed to import hw

Code:
pasuspender -- speaker-test -D front:CARD=H,DEV=0 -t wav -c 2

speaker-test 1.2.7

Playback device is front:CARD=H,DEV=0

Period size range from 48 to 48000
Using max buffer size 96000
Periods = 4
was set period_size = 24000
was set buffer_size = 96000

Write error suggests a problem with usb audio, please check dmesg for errors and consider upgrading your kernel. At this point pulseaudio was not used to test playback at all so let's concentrate on possible alsa-lib and kernel issues.

If it worked sometime in the past, please try looking for what has changed (this is either kernel version, or alsa-lib)

Also please note that most distros ship alsa kernel modules, not built-in. This means that most code paths are only tested with modular alsa, and there could be issues induced by building everything built-in.

I am actually recompiling kernels atm and testing another version.
I cannot be sure when the problem started because i dont always use the heaset but it may have been after a kernel upgrade.

Current dmesg error:
Code:
usb 1-5.4: cannot submit urb 0, error -28: not enough bandwidth

This error indicates that there could be too many things going via same usb path. Try plugging headset to different usb port, preferrably via different hub or directly to your computer (e.g. use front panel usb if available), to test this.

Thank you for the tip.

So here is the current state of the matter.

Although I upgraded to 6.1.9-gentoo, the problem remained.
However, changing to a different usb port, solved the problem.

The motherboard has 12 usb ports built in, and my first thoughts after what you said were that perhaps there is some hardware issue with some, or too many devices on the same bus or perhaps that one is usb 1.* and the device requires usb 2.* or higher.
8 of these ports are all together right in the back. 2 usb ports are above the set of 8 and the rest with motherboard expantion cables.
Over the years the usb dongle has randomly moved usb port without any issues.
Recently I was installing new hardware inside the tower and looks like the usb dongle gor reconnected in another port.

This will help for further conclusions.
