| Can I use a livecd, then emerge in 2.6.0-test11-r2 and use that? will it mess up anything? I tried a 2.6 livecd but there are no stages on the disk, and it doesn't detect my ethernet card |

That's how I built my 2.6 kernel system. Using a 2.4.xx kernel from the live cd, then emerge development-sources, configure, compile, update grub and go.
Shouldn't be any issues. I'm running 2.6.0_beta8. It has been pretty stable for me (athlon-xp 1800, shuttle nforce2 ultra 400 mobo, geforce4 video card).
