Well, it's time for a new system. See any obvious conflicts? Any recommenations? $850 shipped.
Case/PS/HSF/That good stuff
AthlonXP Barton 2600+
Abit NF7-S (nforce2, soundstorm audio, sii 3112A SATA controller)
512MB Corsair XMS ddr400 memory
2xMaxtor Plus 9 160GB SATA drives (gonna go for a raid challenge on the 3112...2.6.0-test11-bk5-bart1 here we come!)
ATI Radeon 9000 Pro 128MB (any suggestions/alternatives for under $100? this one is $75)
Sony DVD drive
HP cd burner from ages ago
Also, will this method of install work? I think it will...but am i missing anything?
On my current hard drive, i compiled 2.6.0-test11-bk5-bart1 with support for all the hardware in my current machine and support for all the hardware in my above system. I'm running that now.
I've emerged nforce-net (so i'll have internet on the new machine), and i've emerge raidtools (so i can make the raid volume).
I've saved a stage to my hard drive, so that's covered.
I intend to stick this hard drive into my new machine, boot up with a boot floppy, and perform the install from that working install of gentoo instead of a liveCD.
that will work, right? just partition/format/extract stage/chroot/build kernel/reboot.
any suggestions? thanks |

sneakerski,
A few suggestions:-
I wouldn't bother with SATA just yet. Its more expensive than IDE and no faster.
Get your memory as two sticks so that you can take advantage off the nForce 2 memory interleaving that doules memory bandwith from the DIMMs to the Nonth Bridge.
I have a similar box that I build in June 2003 for £605. 1Gb RAM Barton 2500+ A7N8X Delux.

Computer users fall into two groups:-
those that do backups
those that have never had a hard drive fail. |
