|
|
It is often said, 'A horse designed by committee turns into a camel.'
Well, I happen to like camels; they can run pretty fast, keep going for a long time, and they also have great grins.
Gentoo web wants a redesign and is holding a competition to decide the winner, I am sure quite a few groups will be entering, but hey this open source, what about an open design brainstorm.
and who better to contribute wacky ideas for the site then the OTW crew.
Questions such as;
Is purple in or out?
If in what shade should it be? websafe or is that old hat now?
Are custom icons the way forward or text links css'd up?
Is that logo eating up too much screen real estate?
Should the logo be re-branded (what about the T-Shirts)?
Are funky DHTML navs in, or just go with the sprawling current navigation that will work with text only browsers, but requires a degree in link hunting to often find the info you want?
Are the shop items a distraction? Should the EShop actually gain more emphasis?
Should Verdana font actually be used (It is from MS but it does look sweet)?
And, finally where is Larry the Cow? or should he remain burger pate, and a new mascot bought in - Is it time for Gazer the Gentoo? |

I think we need to keep the site text-browser friendly, as I often use links2 to browse the site for information when I'm installing Gentoo. _________________ Registered Linux user #356840

Yeah, animated gifs are the shiz-at. What we need is a geocities page with a black background with stars, and a rotating 3D "Email" gif. _________________ Registered Linux user #356840

Yes. And please find a way to put large blocks of (prefferably red) text between <marquee> and <blink> tags, those never go out of style |

Purple is totally in. I'd switch to ^Arch Linux^ if the purple went.
It's a little thing called "style." Look it up. _________________ HOW DO I SHOT WEB |

Someone might create a XHTML strict html document and we would submit CSS style sheets for it, like CSS Zen Garden. |

>>> Make the website style like a slick gnome interface.
I was thinking tech, with a twist as well, good idea.
Just as long as there aren't any of those photos of people staring into screens, pointing something else out to another person who both wear cheesy grins and ties, with an overlay of graphic nonsense.
Unless it was done as parody. |

Personally I believe the Gentoo.org page should look nice, but also be very imformative. Don't cover it all up in nice, neat little graphics, that take away from the information. It still needs to be compatible with lynx and whatnot, so that those who are doing an install without a graphical browser, can get help if needed. Purple really isn't my color, but as long as the information is there, it passes my test. |

Hahaha, Yeah now we're talking! The current Gentoo website looks like crap compared to that. Great design/layout and content, Mirrorball. We're going to have a hard time competing with that. |

I most definately agree. Larry is an awesome posterboy (animal?) for gentoo. Maybe we could create a new logo that included Larry?!? _________________ [ blaksaga.com ] |

Camels spit. Seriously.

Uh oh.

In
Quote: | If in what shade should it be? websafe or is that old hat now? |
Turqoiseish. websafe colors died in the 90's.
Quote: | Are custom icons the way forward or text links css'd up? |
Custom icons can be done with css, even as a replacement to text links which are requirement for accessibility, including support for links2.
Quote: | Is that logo eating up too much screen real estate? |
Nah.
Quote: | Should the logo be re-branded (what about the T-Shirts)? |
Well, if the aim is to look like more corporate friendly or something twisted shit like that, they'd perhaps be best of stealing some mandrake or suse style boring and ugly logo. That colorful piece of abstract art is way too hacker-anarchistic-romantic for serious web site.
Quote: | Are funky DHTML navs in, or just go with the sprawling current navigation that will work with text only browsers, but requires a degree in link hunting to often find the info you want? |
DHTML as in css rollover moneys is yay!
Quote: | Are the shop items a distraction? Should the EShop actually gain more emphasis? |
Shop? What shop?
Quote: | Should Verdana font actually be used (It is from MS but it does look sweet)? |
Verdana should be locked in a chamber and tortured on a daily bases and left unfeeded until it gets nicer and more obeying to reasonable dimensions and proportions.
Quote: | And, finally where is Larry the Cow? or should he remain burger pate, and a new mascot bought in - Is it time for Gazer the Gentoo? |
Larry should be purple! |
