I installed the M$ April update yesterday on four gentoo/windows (3 win10, 1 win 11) double booters. Also a malicious software removal tool update. Later today all four PC's cannot boot gentoo minimal install disks but can boot a Windows 10 install disk. The win 11 also boots win 11 install disk. The installed gentoos are invisible, not bootable or runnable. I have been running dual boot for 17 years, one of these machines was my first uefi dual boot about 10 years ago. This is a first. My assorted uefi/bios report secure boot disabled, I suspect M$ attacked directly in the uefi/bios. My available boot devices show only windows boot manager in some cases in others some legacy devices appear (unbootable).

SO: BE WARNED!

Ideas for a workaround welcomed ...

Can your machines boot into like for example ubuntu live desktop?
If yes boot into it,mount all gentoo partitions chroot and re-install grub.

On Windows you can open CMD as administrator and check with
Code:
bcdedit /enum firmware

whether the boot entries in the NVRAM still exist for Gentoo or not.

If they are missing, check the files on the ESP. If the bootloader files are missing, reinstall the bootloader. If the bootloader files still exist, recreate the boot entries in the NVRAM.

Isn't secureboot/tmp a requirement for Windows 11?

Does is work with a another distro?

@ banana

Only1 was win11/gentoo and both win11 and gentoo were booting very nicely for 3 days until yesterday->4-12-2023
3 of the casualties were win 10/gentoo and both win10 and gentoo were booting very nicely for years until yesterday, if there is a win 11 prohibition on disabling secure boot it may have been misapplied to win 10.@

@ alamahant
one box recognized ubuntu dvd and on fourth try installed in ram. installed a brand new 128GB flash drive between failures 1,2, and 3; maybe a bigger target made difference. have had no drive for 2, new 32 gig stick for 3, 128 gig for 4. disk drives are hot swappable ssd's; had tried win only installed, gentoo only installed, neither installed with the gentoo minimal install cd. this machine could see the efi on the cd when no disk drives were swapped in but only went to GRUB prompt will go play with ubuntu.

@ sMueggli
Will try bcedit comand suggested. Was trying mountvol R: /S (and/or \S ) may be typo here - used copy and paste from Rodsbooks at the time and kept getting parameter error

On my mainly used windows 10 machine with ubuntu running in ram: the empty 128 gig flash was/is seen. I swapped the gentoo ssd in; it promptly appeared in ubuntu looking normal. Plan: install ubuntu on flash drive. copy gentoo to another flash drive. try to see what the nvram holds in the 'win 11 on new hardware' machine and in the remaining 'win 10 on really old hardware' machine.

4 dual boot machines recovered from having the EFI nvram cleaned out of every entry that was not M$ boot manager or legacy non UEFI hardware devices
during repairs memory returned of this happening when win 7 was replaced by win 8; win 8 was replaced by win 10;
reinstalled rEFInd from Windows on i machine, with gentoo operational (needed dd) made some refind flash drives then installed rEFInd from the flash drives on the other 3 machines. this method adds the rEFInd files to the EFI System Partition
of your choice and writes the nvram then you can boot from the flash drive or reboot and boot from rEFInd on the ESP you chose.
no idea why the gentoo minimal was not recognized
Having disabled TPM and secureboot so far does not bother Windows 11 on the new hardware.

THANKS alamahant Banana sMueggl

So far the Windows 11 hardware requirements seem to be directed at the hardware manufacturers. The PC Health Check intimidation of users looking at the Oct 14, 2025 Windows 10 retirement https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/products/windows-10-home-and-pro is selling hardware and Win 11 (me).
There apparently are ways to run Win 11 on non-compliant hardware, for example:

https://www.easeus.com/system-to-go/how-to-bypass-secure-boot-and-tpm-on-windows-11.html
