Some time ago my openGL screensavers began running really, really slow. At the same time the cpu load is 100%. I've got a geforce3 deluxe videocard and when I'm starting X, the nvidia-logo flashes.
I'm currently using

check to see if AGP is enabled

Run (as root):
opengl-update nvidia
and see if that fixes it  |
