|

Hello,
I have several Raspberry Pi (2, 3 and 4) that have been quite happily running Gentoo for several years.
They are running 32 bits kernels. I am planning to upgrade to 64 bits (kernel and everything) for the Raspis that support it (3 and 4 ; Raspis 2 will stay 32 bits).
Pretty sure (but could be wrong) just plugging a 64 bit kernel, changing make.conf and going from there will not be the best of ideas.
What would be the best approach ? Full 64 bits reinstall (on new storage, to be able to revert in case of bad stuff happening) ? Or is there another, not-too-bothersome, way ?
Thanks for your answers and ideas,
Sgc. |

Sargastic,
There is no 32 bit to 64 bit upgrade path. It's a reinstall.
Running a 32 bit userland on top of a 64 bit kernel works.
ARM does not have multilib, so if you go all 64 bit, 32 bit apps will not run.
Later Pi2s had the same SoC as the Pi3. They are in effect, Pi3s without wifi.
That means your Pi2's may be able to run 64 bit too. _________________ Regards,
