|
|
Hi, I'm going to live far away from my current place for 6 month, I can't take everything I own especially not my desktop computer running Gentoo. I was wondering if it will cause some problems once I get back and upgrade my system.
Thanks. |

What does it change if you "know" the answer to your question?
I guess, the main goal of this forum is to solve problems of users. And I further guess, the main goal will not change in the next months. |

fbeth,
If you encounter problems then, start a new topic. I'm sure we're still here. _________________ ..: Zucca :..

Unfortunately, Gentoo is the same. _________________ Regards,

If you have time before you shut it off for the 6 months, document and practice updating the system using squashfs images of the ::gentoo repository.
You can then download image files from which you can update your system.
Use your preferred mirror, or find one here:
https://www.gentoo.org/downloads/mirrors/
Browse to the "snapshots/squashfs/" directory. On the couple of mirrors I've checked, they have one snapshot per month going back to some time in 2016, plus one for each day of the previous 30+ days.
You'll need kernel support and tools:
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/SquashFS
Note that these squasfs images will only help with the ::gentoo repository, not source files and patches. However, in my experience (only once), updating in monthly increments reduced the number of errors to a "manageable" level. I recall only having 1 or a few minor missing sources / patches or something like that. I believe that system was out of date more than 6 months, but not more than a year. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

Gentoo/portage is much better at this than it used to be, 6 months 'isn't that long' anymore.
Every night my machines sync and try to pretend-update, if the pretend fails I get an email and update them myself so as not to "stack problems".
It's at the point now I have to update them myself every 2-4 months because, well updates, breakage used to be a good "time to update" yardstick, not so much now.
Also, if we are using git to sync now, should we not be able to walk back the repo to a date that works without errors to "piecemeal" problems? |

It should be fine anyway, but especially so if you upgrade and depclean before you go. |

Not so sure about that.... I just started the laptop that didn't have updates for a month or so and the dependencies are flying around like snowflakes in a blizzard. I know what I'll spend my weekend on. _________________ Expert in non-working solutions |

That's abnormal and implies cruft in /etc/portage or world file. Please start a new thread about it or pop onto IRC. |
