Hello, I recently started with Gentoo installation and decided to use my external monitor instead of my laptop's built-in monitor, but I have no idea how to do it. I found a few forum comments and Reddit pages on the subject, but they didn't provide enough help. It would be great if you could help me with this!

Welcome to Gentoo,

https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Xorg/Multiple_monitors

add your user to the video group https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Handbook:AMD64/Installation/Finalizing.

and it should work OOTB.

If you have an nvidia dGPU, it's very likely you can't. Very often the mux is driven by the dGPU, so you need the nvidia proprietary driver to power it up. Try with Ubuntu live CD for example, if I remember correctly and if it's still true, you can download the binary driver there and enable the dGPU that way. You can run the installation from Ubuntu just as well as from Gentoo live gui or install CD.

I just tried with the live gui iso and it uses nouveau, which I don't think supports that stuff.

Best Regards,
Georgi

I couldn't be sure if you fully grasped the situation, so I want to add this: Currently, I'm in the early stages of the installation, and since my laptop screen is small, I want to mirror my screen to an external monitor using HDMI so that it doesn't cause me any discomfort throughout the installation. I'm currently using a Live user and the Gentoo LiveCD. I don't use Nvidia GPU either.

As an alternative, if you have another PC available, would be to start the SSH service in the Gentoo Live CD image running on your laptop and then ssh to that from the other PC.

I had to do this last year on a new laptop with a small display defaulting to HD res where I could barely read text on the screen.

It's not the question if you use it. The question is if your laptop has it. If it does, then likely it would be too much trouble to get it working. As suggested above, logging in through ssh may offer you a better solution. You just need to set a password for the root user and start the ssh service.

But first try an Ubunty live CD or something similar. You do not need to be running Gentoo to install Gentoo. Or at least try the live gui iso.

Best Regards,
Georgi

It doesn't have nvidia gpu. I know there is alternative installation methods. I just wondered how can i do this without leaving gentoo's live cd.

was your external monitor connected while booting livecd ?

there's really no need to use a gentoo based live/install iso's - use which ever current available linux based livcd you want- which works with your device.

i suggest a current LiveCD with Gnome - Gnome works good on Notebooks !

i used SysRescueCD - started the gui - installed ungoogled-chromium - started a Stream on my second Monitor.

and installed Gentoo, step by step, while taking notes to myself.

which device are you using? - what happens when you plugin your external monitor - dmesg log ?

please provide more infos if it's not much to ask.
