Hello,
After doing an upgrade from kernel 6.1.19-gentoo to any of the following kernel:
linux-6.1.27-gentoo-r1
[4] linux-6.1.28-gentoo
[5] linux-6.1.31-gentoo *
[6] linux-6.1.38-gentoo
i receive a black screen with a blinking prompt
I compared the kernel and the video staff .. not changed, so I don't understand.
Can you help me please?
Michel

Does the machine have a nvidia video card using proprietary drivers?
EDIT: This should be irrelevant (See post below). I learned something myself today

At least a framebuffer console should appear, nvidia never provided fbcon driver and always counted on the generic ones from the kernel.

It's the same line of kernels, your config can be directly copied, did you copy it or did you manually configure the newer kernels?
Did you happen to forget to create the initramfs?
Also post your kernel config, the working and not working ones.
Best Regards,

Hello Georgi,
I remember now that i emerged nvidia drivers and I think I need to reemerge each time I upgrade the kernel.
I'll try that now and comeback.
Thanks_ |

If this was the problem, remeber to do
Code: | #emerge -a @module-rebuild |
every time you compile a new kernel (I suppose you're using gentoo-sources) _________________ *** !f j00 c4n r34D tH15 tH3N j00 n33D t0 l0g Off *** |

Hello Georgi,
Yes, you are right. I installed x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-390.157 and put in my package.mask >x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-391.
Now i reemerged x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-390.157 and I see the following message:
Be warned/reminded that the 390.xx branch reached end-of-life and
* NVIDIA is no longer fixing issues (including security). Free to keep
* using (for now) but it is recommended to either switch to nouveau or
* replace hardware. Will be kept in-tree while possible, but expect it
* to be removed likely in early 2027 or earlier if major issues arise.
I have an nvidia card but working well, and if i understand the message they will remove the nvidia package in the future? |

If this ever happens, you'll be able to copy the ebuild into a local repo and "maintain" it yourself. And by maintain I mean you shouldn't have to do anything because that driver version is guaranteed to never be updated. For extra piece of mind you could download the source link from nvidia and keep it backed up somewhere, just in case they ever get rid of it (not sure how likely that is). |

There's still more than 3 years until early 2027. Until then I hope you have a new video card. I was with a card from around 2007 I think and it worked up until I retired my old computer. Now I see people are still finding ways to use cards supported by that driver version.

Georgi |
