[solved] dota 2 - stopped working again

on 15 august, presumably after a dota 2 update, it stopped working.

there is nothing in the logs that i can find. steam starts fine, other games work ok. dota launches and the opening video starts. when the main menu screen of dota begins to load, the menu items appear and when the hero animation starts the game freezes (the hero never appears, it's just empty space in the middle of the screen). i can alt-tab back to steam and stop the game.

this is happening on two of three boxes i have. i grabbed a spare hard drive and installed ubuntu one of them, then steam and dota and it works fine under ubuntu. using this as a stop gap for (hopefully) the short term. anyone else have this issue and if so, any fix for it?

nvidia?

I had this same issue and solved it by updating to 535.98 drivers.

There was a stabilization of a mesa update in gentoo recently. I wonder if that is causing issues with the 525.125 drivers. (maybe your unbuntu install has an older version of mesa installed that still works properly with the 525.125 drivers).

Anyways, its difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of the issue when you can't compile dota or steam or nvidia drivers with debug symbols.

As long as I remember right-like, when using nvidia-drivers, mesa is not really being used for things graphics, since nvidia has their own implementation of everything... so at least in theory it should not be that.
