Hi, this is my first gentoo install.
I've compiled the kernel, and made sure to include the mandatory options and uefi options from here .
When trying to emerge grub, sudo and some other packages I get the following error
The relevant portion of the emerge dependency error is as follows
Code:

[ebuild  N     ] sys-boot/grub-2.06-r7  USE="fonts nls sdl themes truetype -device-mapper -doc -efiemu -libzfs -mount (-test) -verify-sig" GRUB_PLATFORMS="efi-64 pc -coreboot -efi-32 -emu -ieee1275 (-loongson) -multiboot -qemu (-qemu-mips) -uboot -xen -xen-32 -xen-pvh"

For more information about Blocked Packages, please refer to the following
section of the Gentoo Linux x86 Handbook (architecture is irrelevant):

https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Handbook:X86/Working/Portage#Blocked_packages

Adjusting the USE flags in /etc/portage/make.conf has not helped. (tried -systemd)
The conflicting dependencies are not deselectable (not in world)
Is this line from the link relevant? "It is also possible that two packages that are yet to be installed are blocking each other. In this rare case, try to find out why both would need to be installed. In most cases it is sufficient to do with one of the packages alone."
I'm guessing my last resort of running emerge with --nodeps is not a good idea, and am unsure how to proceed.

output of emerge --info:

First off to get some confusion straight, are you setting up a systemd box or a no-systemd box?

Systemd-utils is used for non-systemd boxes, and should not be installed on systemd machines -- systemd itself includes all functionality of systemd-utils.
If you have systemd-utils installed you must have a non-systemd system, and if you're trying to convert to systemd, at this point it's probably very painful to do and if you're just starting from scratch, it's easier to just choose the correct stage3 tarball that you want instead of trying to convert...

It looks like you're trying to use the profile default/linux/amd64/17.1/desktop/plasma/systemd - which means you do want systemd... Easier to try to start with the systemd stage3 tarball in this case?

I'll take a shot --but others are better at this than me; beware.

So you have a systemd profile.

systemd-utils is a subset pulled out for us systemd-averse types :D . You should be getting the whole thing, not the subset. The subset conflicts with the whole. Why do you have the subset ?

Well, further down it says:
Quote:
(sys-apps/systemd-utils-253.6-2:0/0::gentoo, installed) pulled in by
sys-apps/systemd-utils[udev] required by (virtual/udev-217-r6-1:0/0::gentoo, installed) USE="(-systemd)" ABI_X86="(64)"
sys-apps/systemd-utils[tmpfiles] required by (virtual/tmpfiles-0-r5-1:0/0::gentoo, installed) USE="(-systemd)" ABI_X86="(64)"

So systemd-utils, which you shouldn't need, is pulled in because virtual/udev and virtual/tmpfiles have USE=-systemd. Why is that? How did that USE flag get imposed on udev and tmpfiles ?

I think if you can get rid of that "USE-systemd" your problem will be solved. Did you do anything in /etc/portage/package.use ?

Thank you, now that I think about it I definitely downloaded the openrc tarball and forgot about it (I'm not doing the install all at once). I guess its back to tarball lol.

Technically migrating back&forth systemd and openrc is possible, but it's not really documented (that I've seen) and can be a bit confusing if not familiar with things yet.

So yeah, if still early may as well change tarball.

If interested, after you changed the profile to a systemd profile, you needed to

# emerge --newuse --deep @world

and get all the USE flags of packages matching your new profile - so your virtual/tmpfiles and virtual/udev will get the USE=systemd flags and then the conflict will go away. When doing the use flag world update, portage should get rid of your systemd-utils package and install full systemd. Note that your system will suddenly become unbootable (if it had been before) because init now needs to point to systemd instead, which is different for openrc.

Note that doing this would take a lot of CPU cycles as many packages would need to be rebuilt.

But again I highly suggest not going through this route since you're fairly early on in the voyage - you just got to installing the boot loader so that wouldn't have even been an issue, alas, best to get back to shore and set sail again.

[edited, i didn't like my wording at all. it was terrible.]
