But I have no idea about it. I need some help. ![Rolling Eyes :roll:](images/smiles/icon_rolleyes.gif) _________________ Illegitimi non carborundum.

Try running Xorg -configure and see if it makes a useful output. |

Please ensure that CONFIG_DRM_AMDGPU=m in the kernel config and that the linux-firmware package is installed in order to have full graphics support. |

Thanks Banana, there were some little more stuff I had to update on my kernel, I recompiled it and updated linux-firmware.
I also found out that mouse support was off in the kernel, so I turned it on and recompiled the kernel once again with updating linux-firmware and getting GPM.
Xorg was able to detect my mouse (touchpad), but neither the mouse nor Xorg work.
Here's Xorg -configure:

When I startx now I get the same error as in the beginning, except this time for some reason all of (EE) messages are condensed in one line where I can't see some of it but obviously they seem like giving the same errors. _________________ Illegitimi non carborundum. |

Torpus,
You have exactly one AMDGPU card its detected here.
Code: | [ 269.472] (--) PCI:*(0@0:1:0) 1002:9874 |
So your has to be incorrect.
Most of your xorg.conf is redundant. As a test, rename it to xorg.conf_broken, so that its not found.
If all is well, running Xorg now will get you the default single screen, right handed user USA keymap view.
If that works, two displays is a configuration issue.
The idea is to split the problem into pieces then fix each piece, rather than have one big problem. _________________ Regards,

I don't have .xinitrc in /root or /home/user
I tried renaming my xorg.conf to xorg.conf_broken, when I Xorg -configure again a new identical xorg.conf.new gets automatically created after while Xorg gives the same error.
Also if I just typed
I'll have pretty much the same no screens found error alongside with vesa refusing to run:

I have also to note an important thing that is my touchpad doesn't work here even when I checked my kernel config (and recompiled it) and the GPM daemon starts, which is pretty weird. I believe that the mouse must work in order for X11 to start, but even in the terminal interface I can't see any small white block (or whatever it's called) that I can hover with my touchpad
Here's my /etc/init.d/gpm
Maybe the main issue can be from there. _________________ Illegitimi non carborundum. |

Torpus,
Xorg -configure has been broken longer than I can remember but the automatics do a good job.
It really is OK to not have an xorg.conf as a get you going measure.
With no .xinitrc, startx will try to start three xterms and an xclock all wrapped up in twm.
That's all well and good but they are not installed unless you did that.
xorg needs some root help to set up before it drops to user privs.
If you don't use a display manager, you need to provide the root help. _________________ Regards,

I'm not trying to run a DE but a window manager instead which is dwm, it's already installed and set.
xterms, xclock and twm were all not installed, so I emerged them.
I forgot to tell also that right now I'm doing EVERYTHING as root.
Now when I startx, it gave me the same error as the one in the beginning, except that

Torpus,
How do you expect to start your window manager?
If you have an xorg.config, get rid of it.
To start dwm by running startx follow https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Dwm#Configuration _________________ Regards,

startx shows the same permission denied error again
I expected that dwm would start after doing the startx command, but even after installing the packages and following the guide it just doesn't work.
I'd pastebin my log and dmesg again in just a sec
edit: here they are: dmesg.txt Xorg.0.log
The weirdest thing in it is that startx says permission denied while Xorg -configure says a completely different thing which is no screens found (in this time)
Sorry if I sounded to dumb btw, everyone went through this..

The xorg.log shows xf86-video-ati installed when it won't help and it also shows that xf86-video-amdgpu is not installed.
Your GPU is controlled by CONFIG_DRM_AMDGPU on the kernel side and xf86-video-amdgpu on the Xorg side.
What does modprobe --first-time amdgpu report? If successful, it won't output anything.
What does emerge -pvO xf86-video-amdgpu report? |

Torpus,
Ignore Xorg -configure. Its not useful.
Here is the automatics sorting out Video drivers. Its picked ati as the best.
Code: | [ 38.611] (==) Matched ati as autoconfigured driver 0
[ 38.611] (==) Matched modesetting as autoconfigured driver 1
[ 38.611] (==) Matched fbdev as autoconfigured driver 2
[ 38.611] (==) Matched vesa as autoconfigured driver 3
[ 38.611] (==) Assigned the driver to the xf86ConfigLayout |
Code: | [ 38.622] (EE) open /dev/dri/card0: No such file or directory | Your kernel is missing DRM support.
That will be Radeon in the kernel.
But ... Code: | [ 38.605] (--) PCI:*(0@0:1:0) 1002:9874: | is a PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9874 - Wani [Radeon R5/R6/R7 Graphics]
In turn, that's a Carrizo family GPU which comes under Volcanic Islands
Either Radeon or AMDGPU can be used but you may not use half of one and half of the other.
The Radeon Xorg driver loaded, found that's its DRM support was maissing and gave up.
Modesetting will work on top of any DRM support but until your kernel provides /dev/dri/card0 nothing else matters.
Pastebin your kernel .config file please. _________________ Regards,

Here's my .config
I get this when I run:
Code: | ~ # modprobe --first-time amdgpu
modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'amdgpu': Invalid argument
~ # emerge -pvO xf86-video-amdgpu
These are the packages that would be merged, in order:
[ebuild R ] x11-drivers/xf86-video-amdgpu-23.0.0::gentoo USE="-udev" 0 KiB
Total: 1 package (1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 0 KiB
* IMPORTANT: 17 news items need reading for repository 'gentoo'.
* Use eselect news read to view new items. |
Thanks in advance!
Also how come I'm having Volcanic Islands but I need Radeon graphic support?? ![Confused :?](images/smiles/icon_confused.gif) _________________ Illegitimi non carborundum. |

There is a kernel problem with loading support for amdgpu. When you ran this command, some new logging should have appeared in dmesg.
If not, then reinstalling kernel modules may solve it as well. Make sure there is nothing strange in /etc/modprobe.d referring to amdgpu as well. |

First of all: Do you know what kernel command line parameter "nomodeset" does ? Why you have enabled it ? Please delete it.
(In the mean time I will look to your kernel .config) |

I did only a short overview ... maybe you want read:
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/User:Pietinger/Tutorials/Manual_Configuring_Kernel_Version_6.1
Code: | 1)
#
# CPU Frequency scaling
#
# CONFIG_CPU_FREQ is not set
# end of CPU Frequency scaling
2)
CONFIG_CFG80211=y
CONFIG_MAC80211=y
3)
# CONFIG_PINCTRL_AMD is not set
4)
# CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_REALTEK is not set
5)
# CONFIG_USB_UAS is not set
6)
CONFIG_AMD_IOMMU=y
# CONFIG_AMD_IOMMU_V2 is not set
7)
CONFIG_INTEL_IOMMU=y
8)
# CONFIG_FUSE_FS is not set
9)
# CONFIG_SECURITY_YAMA is not set
# CONFIG_SECURITY_LANDLOCK is not set
10a)
CONFIG_CRYPTO_SHA256=y
CONFIG_CRYPTO_SHA512=y
10b)
# CONFIG_CRYPTO_SHA1_SSSE3 is not set
# CONFIG_CRYPTO_SHA256_SSSE3 is not set
# CONFIG_CRYPTO_SHA512_SSSE3 is not set
11)
# CONFIG_CRYPTO_CRC32C_INTEL is not set
# CONFIG_CRYPTO_CRC32_PCLMUL is not set |
1) You really should configure this (see also warning in your dmesg)
2) As already mentionend in your other thread
3) It is an AMD machine. Enable it.
4) I think you will need it.
5) Better performance (if you have an USB device which supports it)
6) I dont know if you need also V2 ... just enable it. If it is not supported it does not hurt.
7) You really dont need it.
8 ) Some applications want this ...
9) It is highly recommended to enable both
10) If you need both (a) THEN check with "lscpu" if you have "avx" or "sha_ni". If yes enable all (b) also static (performance!)
11) This is needed by every block device. If "lscpu" shows "pclmulqdq" or "sse4_2" then enable both static (performance)
BTW: Your configuration for your AMD GPU is okay ... You have just forbid it with your wrong kernel parameter |

P.S.:
Torpus,
after reviewing my threads I have seen that there is a third thread from you (GRUB stuck at Loading initial ramdisk after first boot) ... already solved. Let me say that I like it very much if people make their own kernel. You learn the most about Linux and your own system. In a german article I said: "Dont try to make a perfect kernel configuration in the first run ... because it is impossible ... it takes time and experience to get an optimal kernel". So let me please point you also to a (great) wiki article about an AMD notebook (ROG Zephyrus G14):
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/ROG_Zephyrus_G14_(2022)_GA402#Kernel
Maybe you will find some hints here - especially for AMD P-State:
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/ROG_Zephyrus_G14_(2022)_GA402#AMD_P-State |
