Hello,
Do you know which version of ffmpeg is going to be stabilized ?
I really need the version bump for some packages. handbrake for example.
The reason I'm asking is I'd like to upgrade early but I don't want to rebuild again if for some reason ffmpeg6 is stabilized instead of ffmpeg5.
For those already using it (5 or 6), do you experience any issue with it ? |

Considering cherry-picked binary packaging prior to upgrade to lower the burden of a fallback...

FF 6's main claim seems to be the addition of using av1 hardware when available.
But here's something to peruse

I'm still using version 4 myself, haven't felt the need to upgrade ... yet. _________________ PRIME x570-pro, 3700x, 6.1 zen kernel

I use media-video/ffmpeg-6.0-r6, as it's the latest on ~amd64.
Haven't encountered any problems so far. _________________ My overlay: https://github.com/stefan11111/stefan_overlay

Well, there isn't much to rebuild, it doesn't look too painful. so I'll give a try to ffmpeg6 then. According to sam on bug tracker, ffmpeg6 should be stabilized *crossing fingers*
It seems kodi wants ffmpeg6, even with live ebuild. So since I rarely use it anyway, I unmerged it.
Also needed to keyword new chromaprint, no big deal.
Code: | [ebuild r U ~] media-video/ffmpeg-6.0-r6 [4.4.4-r3] USE="lcms%* libplacebo%* -jpegxl%"
[ebuild rR ] games-emulation/dolphin-5.0_p20220520-r2
[ebuild r U ~] media-libs/chromaprint-1.5.1-r3 [1.5.1-r2]
[ebuild rR ~] media-libs/ffmpegsource-2.40-r2
[ebuild rR ] media-libs/mlt-7.16.0-r1
[ebuild rR ] media-sound/mpd-0.23.12-r2
[ebuild rR ] media-video/ffmpegthumbnailer-2.2.2-r1
[ebuild rR ] media-video/mpv-0.36.0-r1
[ebuild rR ] media-video/x264-encoder-0.0.20220222
[ebuild rR ] net-im/qtox-1.17.6-r1
[ebuild rR ] net-misc/tigervnc-1.13.1-r3
[ebuild rR ~] media-video/makemkv-1.17.4-r1
The following packages are causing rebuilds:
(media-video/ffmpeg-6.0-r6:0/58.60.60::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) causes rebuilds for:
(media-libs/ffmpegsource-2.40-r2:0/4::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge)
(net-im/qtox-1.17.6-r1:0/0::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge)
(media-libs/chromaprint-1.5.1-r3:0/1::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge)
(media-video/ffmpegthumbnailer-2.2.2-r1:0/0::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge)
(media-libs/mlt-7.16.0-r1:0/7::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge)
(net-misc/tigervnc-1.13.1-r3:0/0::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge)
(games-emulation/dolphin-5.0_p20220520-r2:0/0::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge)

I'd kinda want to see ffmpeg5 skipped at this point. Packages with issues tend to be bad with both 5 and 6 anyway (due to using deprecated and now removed functionality, not because 5-6 are broken), so 5 helps little.
...but ffmpeg5 is technically an LTS branch, and may be better fitting for stable.
That aside I've been using 6.0 for a while now, I wouldn't expect notable issues. Not that I've been looking at it all that closely (I don't maintain it). If had to pick I'd want a stable 6.1 just because I don't stabling .0 versions, but it's sure taking longer than I thought to release. |

Indeed. Hopefully it shouldn't take much longer.
Anyway, so far so good with ffmpeg6, made a couple of encodes, tracks extraction with it. No issues with mpv, mpd which I use on a daily basis as well. |
