I am looking at buying a palm or a pocketpc and am having trouble deciding which to get.
Does gentoo/linux have good support for palm pilots?, if it does i will buy a palm. But i think i will go for a pocket pc if i'm stuck with windows... |

gentoo has great support (you just have to set it up) http://packages.gentoo.org/packages/?category=app-pda
I use a Tungsten e and i havn't had any problems.
I would suggest against a pocketpc because in all honesty i've heard of more problems with pocketpc's than palms
if you want something with a bit more power you could try a sharp zaurus _________________ A computer without a Microsoft operating system is like a dog without bricks tied to its head.

I have a Handspring Visor "Platinum" that syncs to my RH machine using
'jpilot' (and the 'j' does NOT mean java) via a serial connection.
I've been successfully using this combo, for years, to keep track of my business contacts and calendar.
Two weeks ago, I upgraded from the Visor to a Treo 600, which uses the
Palm OS (v 5.2 ?). I am syncing to it from a gentoo machine, using 'jpilot'
and the usb cradle via /dev/ttyUSB1. This seems to be working out fine.
Here's more... that may answer other questions...
Last fall, before a two week business trip, I bought a Zaurus and a lan card
so that I could get my email (via ssh) and browse the net from the hotel.
This worked out fine. I also have a wifi card for the 'Z', that allowed me to
walk around parts of Asheville, N.C., reading '/.' on another trip.
I have bought music players for both the Treo and the Zaurus that play
ogg's as well as mp3's, allowing me to use the same SD cards with my
ogg's on both machines.
I have a Pockettop ir keyboard for the 'Z' that works. There's no Treo 600
driver for it, but I will probably try the Treo 300 driver later this week.
The Visor has a B&W screen that is quite clear in strong light, but next to
useless in low light, in spite of its backlight. The Treo color screen is fine
indoors, but is bad in direct sunlight, and so-so in shaded sunlight.
Though a contributing factor to this problem is the plastic screen cover of
the holster.
The color screen of the 'Z' doesn't seem as bright as the Treo's, but I
don't recall having problems reading it (some time ago) during my walk
around Asheville. Gonna have to do a comparo tomorrow.
The Treo's the smallest and is not so big and heavy as to be uncomfortable
in a pair of slacks, though I normally have it in a belt holster. The 'Z' is
the biggest and heaviest, and though I have a 3rd party oversized belt
pouch that accomodates it and the wifi card case easily, I normally hand
carry it in the pouch.
I don't consider the palm machines to be "real" computers, while the 'Z'
has linux at its core and understands real file and directory structures.
I wouldn't want to do "real" work on any of them, or at least, not for
very long. |
