My best guess is it was a spider. AKA data harvester.
Could be a search engine update. |

Can't recall the previous record and date...
Are you suggesting some forum accounts are bind to data grabing bots?

No, I'm suggesting that a factor of 20 between currently online and max online implies a common cause for the vast majority of those visits in a peak.
Like a single spider pulling multiple strings. It would be much more probable than 5k people independently making decision to go online at the same time. but phpBB could still interpret it as 5k unique visitors, because they don't have session cookies or for whatever other reason.
Spiders can use multiple IPs, ignore cookies, etc, so the forum script doesn't recognize it as a single guest pulling multiple documents. This may be intentional to avoid bans, or simply a side effect of running a distributed system.
Bots can also be much more intense in their browsing habits than a human would, so it is actually possible for a single bot to pull 5k documents (without cookies, because who cares about implementing cookies) within 15 minutes or whatever the "online" window in phpbb is. |
