|
|
Hi guys,
I've been following this wiki to install Gentoo on the raspberry pi 5, especially for WIFI: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Raspberry_Pi4_64_Bit_Install#WiFi.
However, since this wiki is for 4 not 5, I don't think the WIFI module is properly installed. I assume brcmfmac43455 can only work for Pi 4, and that's why it fails for Pi 5. I get it, that's fine. But how do I install the correct module for Pi 5? Is brcmfmac43456 for Pi 5? However, I don't see any brcmfmac43456 after I installed raspberrypi-wifi-ucode and linux-firmware.
Has anyone successfully installed WIFI module on Pi 5 and teach me how please? |

DarthJoker,
Welcome to Gentoo.
Skip to the end of Raspberry Pi Install Guide
You will be missing brcmfmac43455-sdio.txt. I had to copy it from PiOS.
As its a Broadcom file, I'm very reluctant to share it.
It appears to be at https://github.com/reMarkable/brcmfmac-firmware/blob/master/brcmfmac43455-sdio.txt now. That's new since I installed my Pi5 in early December. _________________ Regards,

Thank you NeddySeagoon!
However, it still didn't work after I added that file.
Right now there are 3 files under /lib/firmware/brcm/:
* brcmfmac43455-sdio.bin
* brcmfmac43455-sdio.clm_blob
* brcmfmac43455-sdio.txt
Do I still miss something?

Also, below is what I got from Rasbian:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 22 Nov 15 14:19 /mnt/gentoo/lib/firmware/brcm/brcmfmac43455-sdio.raspberrypi,5-model-b.txt -> brcmfmac43455-sdio.txt
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2074 Nov 15 14:19 /mnt/gentoo/lib/firmware/brcm/brcmfmac43455-sdio.txt
It created a link to brcmfmac43455-sdio.txt, is this necessary? |

DarthJoker,
Lets get into the detail of didn't work. Once we know where its broken, we can fix it.
The missing firmware file should allow your wifi interface to appear in
You may need to reboot to get the module to load again and pick up the missing file.
Until you can see your wifi interface, you can't configure it or start it.
How you configure wifi depends on the tools you choose.
Whatever the shiny wrapper, it a two stage process.
1. Get the radio link up. This involves authenticating and associating with the wireless access point.
2. Once that is successful. wifi behaves like any other Ethernet, so you can set it up with dncpcd, or whatever you would like to use for wired networking.
Each step depends on the step that went before, so we need to reduce the problem space.
Whatever tools you use, you will need to know the WiFi SSID and pass phrase to configure the interface. _________________ Regards,

Hi NeddySeagoon,
Sorry I didn't make myself clear enough. When I said it didn't work, I meant the module is not properly loaded. I don't see any WIFI interface even with command.
Pasting content of dmesg here, hope it helps.

I guess those errors indicate what is wrong with the module, please ignore the bluetooth part, I just want to get wifi fixed. Thanks!
UPDATE:
After I manually created a symlink brcmfmac43455-sdio.raspberrypi,5-model-b.bin to brcmfmac43455-sdio.bin, that error went away, but I got new error saying that
Code: | brcmfmac: brcmf_sdio_htclk: HT Avail timeout (1000000): clkctl 0x50 |
UPDATE UPDATE:
It is shown now after I changed boardflags3 from 0x48200100 to 0x44200100, and the reason I changed that to 0x48200100 before is that it is said in here: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Raspberry_Pi4_64_Bit_Install#WiFi. Guess that is not necessary now.
Now I can see wlan0. |

When I start to configure wifi network, I realise that there is proper tool to do so. There is no iw, no wpa_supplicant, no NetworkManager, is there a way to configure WIFI then?

DarthJoker,
The kernel module has file names that it needs to load.
brcmfmac43455-sdio.txt takes the place of data that would normally be in the (EFI) firmware but the Pi doesn't have that.
It really is a text file.
Here, its a real file. On RPiOS its a real file with a symlink.
Code: | /mnt/cdrom/lib/firmware/brcm/brcmfmac43455-sdio.raspberrypi,5-model-b.txt -> brcmfmac43455-sdio.txt |
I don't have that symlink on my Pi.
The first file is for bluetooth, the other 3 are for the Wifi
Code: | BCM4345C0.raspberrypi,5-model-b.hcd
brcmfmac43455-sdio.raspberrypi,5-model-b.bin
brcmfmac43455-sdio.raspberrypi,5-model-b.clm_blob
brcmfmac43455-sdio.raspberrypi,5-model-b.txt |
In full, its
Code: | ls -l /mnt/cdrom/lib/firmware/brcm/ | grep 5-mod
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 Oct 24 15:05 BCM4345C0.raspberrypi,5-model-b.hcd -> BCM4345C0.hcd
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 31 Nov 15 14:19 brcmfmac43455-sdio.raspberrypi,5-model-b.bin -> ../cypress/cyfmac43455-sdio.bin
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 36 Nov 15 14:19 brcmfmac43455-sdio.raspberrypi,5-model-b.clm_blob -> ../cypress/cyfmac43455-sdio.clm_blob
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 22 Nov 15 14:19 brcmfmac43455-sdio.raspberrypi,5-model-b.txt -> brcmfmac43455-sdio.txt |
Do you have the files that the symlinks point to?
e.g. if you have slimmed down linux-firmware by not installing the cypress directory, you will have missing firmware.
My working Pi5 has all of linux-firmware plus brcmfmac43455-sdio.txt and none of the brcmfmac43455-sdio.raspberrypi,5-model* symlinks. _________________ Regards,

Below is what I have in the firmware/brcm folder:
Code: | xxxx@gentoo-dublin raspberrypi % ls -l /mnt/gentoo/lib/firmware/brcm
total 644

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4733 Jan 15 20:33 brcmfmac43455-sdio.clm_blob
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 22 Jan 15 20:40 brcmfmac43455-sdio.raspberrypi,5-model-b.bin -> brcmfmac43455-sdio.bin
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 2099 Jan 1 1970 brcmfmac43455-sdio.txt |
What can I use to configure WIFI then? There is no iw, wpa_supplicant or NetworkManager. I guess the last way to do it is to connect to ethernet and emerge wap_supplicant? |

DarthJoker,
That looks good.
Until the interface appears in you cannot configure it.
The source files are all architecture independent.
On the Pi run Code: | emerge -pf net-wireless/wpa_supplicant | and it will list the required files.
Fetch the files and put them into /var/cache/distfiles/ then do the emerge for real. No wired Ethernet required.
You can fetch the files however you like. Its a form of sneakernet. _________________ Regards,

NeddySeagoon,
Turns out, wlan0 is not working properly, I can see the interface, but it cannot connect to WIFI at all.
when I start wpa_supplicant as a service, it says the service is running, but the network is not connected, wlan0 doesn't have an IP at all.
So I run the following command to see more output
Code: | wpa_supplicant -c /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf -i wlan0 |
However, I saw an error message saying
Code: | wlan0: Could not read SSID from driver |
Which part can be wrong here? Is it the driver? |

DarthJoker,
Its a two step process.
wpa_supplicant does the radio part.
dhcpcd or whatever does the setup.
In you access point, what sort of encryption do you use?
WPA2 or WPA3 is OK. WPA or WPA is not. By default wpa_supplicant does not support them as they are broken.
If you can. change your access point to use at least WPA2.
If you need either of the old broken unsafe cryptos, you need to flip the USE flag on wpa_supplicant and rebuild it.
What ore the permissions on your wpa_supplicant.conf ?
What is the content of wpa_supplicant.conf ?
Obscure the pass phrase an its there in clear text, the SSID too if you wish.
In your Wifi network 'hidden'?
Don't do that. It breaks some drivers, as its not standards compliant and its not hidden at all.
The SSID is dropped of one message out of about three that s appears in.
Look in dmesg. Check fore disconnected reason 3.It probably repeats if its there.
That usually means that there are several things trying to control wpa_supplicant. There must be no more than one. _________________ Regards,

I am pretty my access point is WPA2, so it should be fine. Also, SSID is not hidden.
wap_supplicant.conf:
Code: |

}
|
Permission of wpa_supplicant.conf file:
Code: |
darthjoker@gentoo-dublin ~ % ls -l /mnt/gentoo/etc/wpa_supplicant

DarthJoker,
Your dmesg shows that the error Code: | [ 2.607879] brcmfmac mmc1:0001:1: Direct firmware load for brcm/brcmfmac43455-sdio.raspberrypi,5-model-b.bin failed with error -2 | has gone, so the kernel driver is probably correct and all the bits are there.
What does tell?
What does it do to the ifconfig output?
What does rfkill tell?
Right now I get
Code: | Pi5 ~ $ rfkill
ID TYPE DEVICE SOFT HARD
0 bluetooth hci0 unblocked unblocked
1 wlan phy0 blocked unblocked | so my wifi transmitter is off.
rfkill can enable it too. _________________ Regards,

after running of dhcpcd wlan0, output of rfkill is
Code: |
ID TYPE DEVICE SOFT HARD
0 wlan phy0 unblocked unblocked
1 bluetooth hci0 unblocked unblocked
|
I also tried copying all the kernel/config.txt/cmdline.txt/modules/brcmfmac files from Raspberry Pi OS, it didn't help either. Still don't let me connect to wifi.
Another thing I tried is installing linux-sources and linux-firmware and used genkernel to build a kernel/modules/brcm firmware, this didn't help either.
It's killing me now, what could be the issue....
A random question, if I want to build the kernel myself for raspberry pi, which package should I use, linux-sources or raspberrypi-sources? |

DarthJoker,
raspberrypi-sources is too old. It predates the RP1 I/O chip used on the Pi5
linux-sources is the upstream kernel, from kernel.org That predates, the RP1 I/O chip too.
Support may begin to appear in 6.8.x but that's not even at -rc1 status yet.
The only way right now is to get a Code: | git clone https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux |
You don't need the whole thing a Code: | git clone --depth=1 https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux | will get you the current 6.1.y Pi Foundation kernel sources.
My /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf: |
ctrl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=wheel
network={
ssid="RadioNet24"
scan_ssid=1
key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
psk="<sekrit>"
} |
Humour me. Use that wpa_supplicant.conf file with your SSID and shared secret.
Its almost a copy of an example from Code: | man wpa_supplicant.conf |

Thank you NeddySeagoon, now I understand what linux sources should I use.
Unfortunately, wlan0 still didn't work. I tried your wpa_supplicant.conf with my credential, same error
Code: | Could not read SSID from driver. |
Should I try other wireless tool? |

DarthJoker,
It works for me but not for you so its not the tool.
I have wpa_supplicant installed as follows ...
Code: | # eix wpa_
[I] net-wireless/wpa_supplicant
Available versions: 2.10-r1 (~)2.10-r2 2.10-r3{xpak} **9999*l {ap broadcom-sta +crda dbus eap-sim eapol-test fasteap +fils +hs2-0 macsec +mbo +mesh p2p privsep ps3 qt5 readline selinux smartcard tdls tkip uncommon-eap-types wep wimax wps}
Installed versions: 2.10-r3{xpak}(03:02:13 01/01/24)(dbus fils hs2-0 mbo mesh qt5 readline -ap -broadcom-sta -eap-sim -eapol-test -fasteap -macsec -p2p -privsep -ps3 -selinux -smartcard -tdls -tkip -uncommon-eap-types -wep -wimax -wps)
Homepage: https://w1.fi/wpa_supplicant/
Description: IEEE 802.1X/WPA supplicant for secure wireless transfers |
Check your access point crypto. If it includes WPA, the SSID will not be seen. To make wpa_supplicant work with WPA enabled access points USE=tkip must be set.
You could just set USE=tkip and rebuild wpa_supplicant .
WPA is broken and insecure, which is why tkip is off by default.
Some access points allow WPA/WPA2 but that's enough to prevent wpa_supplicant from reporting the SSID.
wpa_cli can tell lots of useful things and bring up the radio link by hand too.
I've never used it though, so other than knowing that it exists, I won't be a lot of help. _________________ Regards,

NeddySeagoon,
quick update, I've got the wifi working with NetworkManager, so I guess it is something wrong with wpa_supplicant. I'll try your USE flags and rebuild the package. |

DarthJoker,
NetworkManager can use either iwd or wpa_supplicant-
Code: | wifi? (
!iwd? ( >=net-wireless/wpa_supplicant-0.7.3-r3[dbus] )
iwd? ( net-wireless/iwd )
) |
It will use iwd if USE=iwd is set and if not, it will use wpa_supplicant.
It may have changed your wpa_supplicant.conf :) _________________ Regards,

DarthJoker,
I'm pleased its working. It would be good to know why.
What is in your wpa_supplicant.conf file now?
That wiki page will be useful to others. Have you considered merging it into the Pi5 section in https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Raspberry_Pi_Install_Guide as it contains a lot of very similar material? _________________ Regards,

DarthJoker,
You need to use iwd or wpa_supplicant to manage the wifi crypto, so you must have one or the other.
Your wiki edits look good to me, thank you.
There is no need to include the dates you make changes. The wiki tracks who did what and when. See https://wiki.gentoo.org/index.php?title=Raspberry_Pi_Install_Guide&action=history.
That page will be restructured soon to be a main page, common to all Pis and a sub page per Pi type and maybe one or two other sub pages.
The 'one page' is getting a bit difficult to follow. _________________ Regards,
