Hi
I am currently istalling gentoo on a new laptop.
I ran genkernel --mountboot --menuconfig all (only changed the entry for the hibernation partition in menuconfig bu soon it failed:
Code:

* kernel: >> Initializing ...
*         >> Previous config backed up to .config--2024-02-09--10-51-45.bak
*         >> Running 'make mrproper' ...
*         >> Running 'make oldconfig' ...
*         >> Invoking menuconfig ...
*         >> Kernel config was not modified!
*         >> Re-running 'make oldconfig' due to changed kernel options ...
* ERROR: compile_generic() failed to compile the "prepare" target!

Inside 'var/log/genkernel.log is saw:
Code:

  ...
  CC      scripts/mod/empty.o
  HOSTCC  scripts/mod/mk_elfconfig
  CC      scripts/mod/devicetable-offsets.s

I do have an x86:64 cpu (13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-1355U) but i don't know to which CPU selection the error message refers to...
Can anybody help here?

I see near the end of your output a reference to i686-pc-linux-gnu-gcc, which seems wrong if you are using a 64-bit kernel on a 64-bit capable CPU. Please post the output of emerge --info (so we can see gcc and binutils versions), pastebin the full build.log, and pastebin the kernel configuration you tried to use. Also, check for stray environment variables, such as ARCH, that may have confused the build process.

It sems i have downloaded
Code:
stage3-i686-openrc-20240205T200142Z.tar.xz

Should i have downloaded this one for an intel cpu
Code:
stage3-amd64-openrc-20240204T1348292.tar.xz
?

Yes. i686 is for 32-bit CPUs from both Intel and AMD. amd64 is for 64-bit CPUs from both Intel and AMD.

I now redid every thing with the amd stage3.
However, genkernel is still failing, though with a different message_

There seems to be no ARCH defined

Regarding the kernel configuration: I used genkernel --menuconfig all and only set the value for the hibernation partition - all the rest i left in the default state.
