Cannot Log in

Here's da deal yo. I have Gentoo installed, but I cannot log in, no matter what I type it does not show up on the screen and doesn't seem to be doing anything. I am installing this on a laptop.
Are they arguements that I should pass to the kernel when booting?
When I had red hat 9.0 installed on it I had to do a nousb and nopcmcia (depcmcia) but that doesn't seem to be helping here.

what do you mean by you cannot login? if your keyboard physically not working? are you getting to the login prompt?
