I had recently not been able to start sway with a number of errors including no permission to access display (despite running elogind), suspected no kms drivers (despite a working X windows environment) and errors related to drm.

I tried basically all the recommendations on the gentoo forums and elsewhere and nothing removed the errors.

However on 4th March 2024 wayland roots was updated to 0.17.1 and appeared to include a new USE variable (drm) - once that was emerged dbus-run-session sway booted the graphical environment as normal - all working.

I thought I would push things further and try Vulkan again as the libraries for that were also recently updated and it works too.

You need to give the command line variable;

WLR_RENDERER=vulkan

Once sway is running vulkaninfo should give interesting output on the V3D 7.1.7 integrated GPU.

Very cool. Does appear exceptionally fast but then sway always was fast under OpenGL.

Could you explain why you think these are related? You disturbed an unanswered post with a response that is neither an answer, nor a request for information that OP could provide to help us solve the problem. Your thread does not presently have an answer, and appears not to be related to OP's problem.

I'm sorry @Hu. I thought it could be helpful to leave that information here so if anybody steps across it, they can retrieve more info. If you think that my answer/answers are irrelevant and disturb the discussion please feel free to delete them :)
