I've just installed Gentoo on a Compaq Armada 7400. It has a PII 366, 128MB RAM, and a 10GB HD.
The install went okay, a few small difficulties, but I got it done. This is my second attempted Gentoo installation. I used genkernel to build my kernel.
My main problem is APM. This laptop is slow. Kernel compiles take forever. The system heats up. The thing has a cooling fan, but it starts with it off, and I haven't found a way to turn it on.
Windows 98 turns the fan on when the system gets warm. I'd like to have that behaviour on Gentoo, but I'm having some trouble figuring this out.
A minor secondary effect of this problem is that halting the system does not turn it off, and disables the power button, forcing me to pull out the battery. I shut down by hitting ctrl-alt-del, and hitting the power switch when grub comes up.
I did an emerge apm, and an emerge apmd, but both give me a 'Kernel has no APM support' error. I checked, and /proc/apm does not exist. So, I need to compile in APM support, yes? Well, checking the configuration I got from genkernel, it looks like it's already there.
I did a search on tldp.org, and found something about adding 'apm=on' to your kernel arguments, but that seemed to apply to some 2.2 kernel. I tried it anyway, it didn't work.
I did a search of these forums, and I found something about removing ACPI support. I tried that, but it didn't help.
So, has anyone seen anything like this before? |

Where? Oh! this one, it's Gentoo.
If you don't have anything constructive to say, you might want to consider staying quiet instead.
To many destructive comments, which in no way will help making the Gentoo community better. |

Sorry, but I never bothered to try getting X running. I'm just using it for console-mode. ![Smile :)](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |
