CUPS unable to print test page: no such file or directory

Printer: HP ColorLaserJet MFP M282-M285

It used to work. Don't know when it stopped working. I deleted and re-installed the printer in CUPS but no joy. I normally print via okular and enscript. These both still work fine.

FYI: I also hit a, perhaps unrelated, problem trying to print from libreoffice (for the first time in years). That failed with the more informative error message: "File "/usr/libexec/cups/filter/pdftopdf" not available: No such file or directory".
