You should have chosen default/linux/amd64/23.0/split-usr instead. Your original profile was a split /usr one. The 23.0 ones that don't have "split-usr" in the name have merged /usr by default.

That's explicitly mentioned in step #6 of the migration instructions.

What is the recommended workaround if during a profile update and the emerge empty tree attempt is interrupted by power loss, or whatever? I assume it can't just be a reboot?
