Wanted to play with LTO to see if I could squeeze more speed for my VM server, but when cmake came back up to be compiled, it broke it. Disabling lto extensions resolves the problem. Also it seems the form code brackets are broken.

Code:
emerge --info '=dev-build/cmake-3.28.3::gentoo'

Portage 3.0.61 (python 3.11.8-final-0, default/linux/amd64/23.0, gcc-13, glibc-2.38-r10, 6.6.21-gentoo-dist x86_64)

ebuild has
Code:
filter-lto
directive.
I have traces dev-build/cmake has been able to build and run with lto here.

If you really want to build current ebuild with lto, either:

1) remove directive from official ebuild, digest ebuild and try rebuild.
2) derive official to local repository, then proceed like in 1)

Code:
quickpkg --include-config y dev-build/cmake
can help to insure recovery, should things turn really bad.

Thks 4 ur attention, interest & support.

Just proceeded successfully as in 1) here.

It makes no sense and as you yourself have discovered, it creates problems to enable LTO on build tools and compilers. Especially compilers won't produce faster binaries and in the same time I don't see much benefit from LTO on the type of load they're executing.

LTO makes sense on end-user packages like browsers et.c.

Also LTO does not make sense if you have decent hardware.

Best Regards,
Georgi

Binary size is criteria for lto here.
Some packages inflate, some shrink.
So cherry picking in /etc/portage/package.env here.

A package status in this regard may vary over releases.
This make things complicated to maintain.

Plz note some packages force -flto internally.
Only log bissecting can reveal it.

Undecent hardware here.

Code:

You're using lld linker, aren't you?
Could be that lld has # results regarding -flto when compared to gnu ld...
