Hello,

Avatar are limited to 80×80 and 7ko.

Don’t you think it’s kind low regarding we are in 2024 with way stronger bandwidth ?

These value are from 2000, probably, but maybe that would be nice to increase allowed weight. Had to export N times in jpeg before it was less than the 7ko limitation.

Regards,

The concept of avatars seems very 2000 to me. I vote we just do away with avatars. Unique usernames only.

as long as the update to a newer forum version isn't done, the limitation exists.

I personally wish, that those limitations from the past could be there again in some cases.
It would avoid so much overhead resulted from "because". Code compiliations would be faster, cars more efficient, games not ~200GB and e-mail would be readable again.....

No. Just because we _can_ do something doesn't mean we should.
What benefit would come from bumping the limits?

Well, I do actually see a benefit to having avatars. Humans are visual creatures, recognizing pictures with distinct features is way easier than recognizing random strings like rab0171610.
Mind that not all usernames are easy to pronounce or retain any meaning when crossing language and cultural barriers. Having avatars is good for developing interpersonal relationships in a setting like a world-wide text based forum.
Yeah, I'm totally going to forget you within like 5 seconds after pushing submit button.

I was doing maintenance on an old PDP system in the 90's. Dev machine had a couple of RK07 drives. A clean build for the software I was working on took over 12 hours, with the washing machine sized drives shaking/rattling/rolling the whole time. Because software has always expanded to fill the hardware available.

It is not as easy as I've said it. Don't be that naive :-)

old cars with the current safety, games good content and current look, lean software with todays fast technology

Computer latency: 1977-2017: https://danluu.com/input-lag/

I think you get the idea :-)

Hello,

I understand these point of view.

Still, 7Kb for an avatar is quite small, but I won’t push a forum upgrade for that purpose :).

Was just curious about it.

Thanks.

kgdrenefort,

The forum upgrade has been in the pipe for several years.
Maybe when it happens. :)

One advantage of their current x,y dimension is that they don't consume an obnoxious amount of screen space. I could have a 100" monitor and I still wouldn't want avatars to be much bigger than they are. As for bandwidth, wasting it doesn't produce a better result. I'm looking at you, modern web.

We know that Gentoo folks are following the 'if it works, don't touch it" MO, but I think it's time to let go of the 2000s and switch to something more modern. XenForo offers a great service and I only know about this org through FreeBSD forums. It looks simple, neat, modern and easily customizable .

7KB size seems completely arbitrary but enough to fit 80x80 GIF... which won't look very good if you use scaling but I guess for what avatars are used for its enough. Its not like purpose of this forum is to pixel-peep avatars.

The only issue Gentoo forum has in mobile devices.
Probably not the biggest issue given its forum for desktop operating system but if anything some layout tweaks would be useful to make it look more reasonable on mobile devices.

I would be against switching to completely different platform because of that. I like BhpBB and always liked it and its always nice to still being able to use it.

A newer iteration of phpBB was already picked a while ago as the next step. The problem, as with all volunteer projects, is getting enough contiguous time from the right people to work on it. Not everyone who has privileged accounts on the forum has the Linux level privileges to do the required work, and some of the people who have the privileges may not have the expertise. In some cases, it may require not just contiguous time from one expert, but concurrent time from multiple people to work on it.
