high UTF8 characters not typing in some applications

Hi

I've set up a custom keyboard layout to enable me to type certain rare characters easily.

One of these is the Roman Denarius sign, (example removed because forum posting fails), which is U+10196, as well as others like the italic Math letters (examples removed because forum posting fails, but xyz variants) etc.

The key combinations to produce them works fine in some apps (like Firefox here), or LibreOffice Writer, or Konsole, or Gimp, or Inkscape, or KMail.

But they do not work in Kate or TeXstudio, which is actually where I am most likely to use them.

I can paste the characters in Kate or TeXstudio, but trying to type them produces nothing.

Is this a bug in these apps? Kate and TeXstudio are both set to UTF-8, and the other apps are a mix of GTK and Qt, so I can't see that it is some lower-level library?....

Any ideas?
