My 2 cenrs is when alternate package needs to statically link to the package with *.a files installed.
I may be totally wrong....
Any thougjh to share?

Correct. This is what USE=static-libs usually controls. When enabled, .a files are installed. When disabled, they are not. |

So generally speaking, no ebuild not requested elsewhere as static should install *.a files?

An ebuild should not set the static-libs USE flag by default (which, as Hu said, should in turn control whether *.a files are installed), if that's what you are asking. That is, don't do IUSE=+static-libs. _________________
