I recall I read a post on the forums about /etc/portage/[env,package.env] with doing some simple programming within.
I may be wrong but it could be about bash syntax, and showing at the end of the day some things that work and some that don't.
Unfortunately I can't retrieve it on the forum.
Maybe someone can help to retrieve?
My use case it about changing a variable value upon testing it's current value

I think that discussion actually happened in a bug. I've lost track of which bug it was.
I remember some of those are parsed by python and some were bash, but I can't tell for sure. I think the ones in category/package were bash. You should be able to easily test that.
