Currently using a Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 11, booting with sys-kernel/gentoo-kernel-6.6.28 (latest AMD64 stable) and since I rebooted today, I haven't been able to use the builtin audio jack.

It worked fine before, and I think it's even worked with this kernel, and I've touched none of the configuration for anything since the update. The only reason I rebooted was because of an (unrelated I think) issue where if I close the lid and let it sit for too long it'll freeze on a black screen which requires me to hold the powerbutton to restart.

When I run aplay -l, it doesn't even output the device, nor is it in /proc/asound/devices
Code:
$ aplay -l

Hello,

I'm not very good with sounds, but I'll give it a try.

First, I think that would be interesting to know a bit more about your system.

- Kernel: 6.6.28
- Profile: ?
- Desktop Environment and Window Manager: ?
- Your USE flags, please execute:
Code:
emerge --info

The last problem I had with sounds was on Xfce, hardened profile, while I have to run pulseaudio --start to have sound.

To be honnest I'm always confuse with alsa, pulseaudio and pipewire.

What are the installed packages ?

Please execute:
Code:
equery l "pulseaudio*" ; equery l "alsa*" ; equery l "pipewire"

And for theses you have, please execute also:
Code:
equery u thepackage

To check what are the used flags while builded. Maybe you rebuilded one of an useful package without paying attention and after reboot it has changed the behavior ?

Hope it helps.

Regards,
GASPARD DE RENEFORT Kévin

Thank you for the reply, here's the info you asked for. Though to be clear, it's just that "audio isn't working," it's that the device which I used to play audio (motherboard soundcard) no longer appears in any of the devices lists.

I have pulseaudio-daemon installed but mainly use JACK2 for sound.
In terms of alsa, I have alsa-lib alsa-topology-conf, alsa-ucm-conf, alsa-plugins, and alsa-utils
I don't have pipewire installed at all.

I don't think the issue here is connecting TO alsa, that works just fine.
It's that the device itself is invisible to the system.
