Hello,

From what I can say, it follows this topic of yours.

You said you changed to plasma profile, did you followed https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Profile_%28Portage%29#Switching_between_profiles, this part ? Did you rebuilded needed packages after the switching of profile ?

Could you return from a TTY the output of these commands please:

Code:
wgetpaste -c "eselect profile list | grep '*'"

It will return a link with the actual return of the command. If you have an error about missing wgetpaste command, install it:

Code:
emerge --ask app-text/wgetpaste

I would also be interested by the return of this command:

Code:
wgetpaste -c "emerge --info"

----

Did you reconfigured your kernels parameters ? Because the SDDM page in it's troubleshooting subsection can have this fix, but I do not think you managed to do some kernel modification yet. If you did not touched your kernel settings, you can probably forget this link, won't help.

Regards,
GASPARD DE RENEFORT Kévin

SDDM installation

When I start sddm:
“/init.d/display-manager restart”
I get a black screen with something flashing at left top and I get a white square moving with my mouse.

I am a newbie try to install SDDM with no luck
just now I have run out of ideas what to do?

I followed SDDM Installation in wiki

In Configuration

File ”/usr/share/sddm/sddm.conf.d” did not exist
and
File ”/usr/bin/sddm –example-conf” did not exist either
so I have not make any configuration

/etc/portage/make.conf
kod

CXXFLAGS="${COMMON_FLAGS}"
FCFLAGS="${COMMON_FLAGS}"
FFLAGS="${COMMON_FLAGS}"

#USE="X"

INPUT_DEVICES="libinput synaptics"

USE="elogind suid -test xorg -systemd"
USE="udev"

In /etc/sddm.conf.d/

# cat override.conf

In /etc/sddm.conf.d/override.conf

# cat /etc/sddm.conf.d/override.conf

In /etc/sddm/scripts/Xsetup

I hope anyone can give me some help here

Code:
[11:00:24.969] (EE) HELPER: Failed to take control of "/dev/tty1" ("root"): Operation not permitted

If you do not use systemd, elogind must be started before Xorg and any window manager.

Ensure that elogind is is the default runlevel.

Its possible that elogind is no even installed if you switched from a non desktop install.
If that is the case, lots of other things will be missing too but one step at a time.

borje2,

That will start elogind at boot.

To start it right now run
Code:
/etc/init.d/elogind start

borje2,

Reboot,

Make friends with wgetpaste.
Use it to post /var/log/Xor.0.log and ~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log

The firs is written by root when it runs your graphical login.
The latter is written by your user when you try to start Xorg as your user.

elogind does the setup things that Xorg needs to performed as root.

As as aside, what does the
Code:
groups
command return for your normal user?

borje2,

Code:
[    39.962] (II) LoadModule: "nvidia"
[    39.962] (WW) Warning, couldn't open module nvidia
[    39.962] (EE) Failed to load module "nvidia" (module does not exist, 0)
[    39.962] (EE) No drivers available.

That's the problem.

Somewhere in /etc/X11/* you have told the system to use the binary blob nvidia-drivers.
You have
Code:
 VIDEO_CARDS="nouveau"
so nvidia-drivers is not installed.

Remove the Section that tells Xorg to use the nvidia driver.
The entire Section, not just the line mentioning nvidia.

wgetpaste make files and command output easier for your helpers to work with than in line.
Also you can post bigger output than a post permits using wgetpaste.

Only a short note: elogind belongs into runlevel "boot". See also: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Elogind#Service

(Of course you should have Use-flag "elogind" enabled and have emerged everything with this Use-flag ... especially dbus)

(With NVIDIA our legend @Neddy can help better than I)

borje2,

That's a different thing.

Xorg is being told to load the nvidia driver and can't, so it fails.
x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers being masked prevents it being installed. That does not stop Xorg trying to obey the command to load it.

What does
Code:
grep -i nvidia -R /etc/X11/
tell?
The right answer is nothing.

pietinger,

Maybe I'm getting too old for this :)

borje2,

It has a -h option.
Code:
wgetpaste -h

wgetpaste /path/tofile puts file onto a pastbin.

Code:
wgetpaste -c 'emerge --info'
Your paste can be seen here: https://bpa.st/2UHA
puts the command and its output onto a pastbin

In both cases, you post the URL

Different sites have different size limits, so you may need to use trial and error with big pastes.

See the -s and -s options.
