Posted: Wed May 08, 2024 3:47 pm Post subject: NetworkManager does not detect the nearest network |
|
|
I have the problem that NetworkManager does not detect the name of the closest network, NetworkManager only detects the Router that is about 7 or 8 meters away (Approximately) and is unable to connect to it or in some cases it does not appear.
The Wireless Adapter that my PC does not detect, as I said previously, the extender's Wifi network.
I connected through USB Tethering on my Galaxy S20 FE 5G but on Sunday I switched from the official firmware to an unofficial LineageOS 20 build that is stable and Open Source, but the "USB Tethering" does not work. It is not detected by Gentoo nor by a Debian installation that I have. (I came to the conclusion that the problem may be some LineageOS configuration). I was also compiling the gentoo kernel several times, selecting Qualcomm/Atheros drivers, but it didn't work.
so I no longer have the means to have internet. On my main PC, I also haven't finished installing gentoo, I still need to get KDE Plasma to work, which with the Nvidia driver. Proprietary does not start and I am left with the SDDM black screen after logging in with it. (I would have Try the Nvidia Open driver (https://github.com/NVIDIA/open-gpu-kernel-modules). but the driver is another separate issue.
CONCLUSION: I have problems with my wireless adapter and NetworkManager and it does not detect the nearest network/extender. and only the one from the router that is further away and cannot be connected to it.
Note: I don't know how to extract logs from the screen so a little help wouldn't hurt on that topic.
Extra: also to include, I disconnected the PC for 2 to 3 minutes but it didn't work.
Specifications: (This information would also be necessary for sure)
Wireless adapter: TL-WN823N V2
Motherboard: ASUS Prime B550MK
Storage: SATA 940GB SSD
RAM:64GB
Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 5950X
Graphics: Nvidia GTX 1050 TI

ian848uig,
You can save logs to a file, put the file onto USB and move it to somewhere you can post from.
Asa worked example, then put dmesg.txt onto a pastebin site.
Gentoo provides wgetpaste to make that easy. It's a bash script.
If you want a guess, Gentoo no longer provides WPA support by default as its no longer secure.
The real fix is to use WPA2 or WPA3.
Some access points offer mixed WPA/WPA2 modes. Gentoo will not connect to them by default either.
If you must have WPA support, set the USE=tkip flag on wpa_supplicant and rebuild it.
That should be a per package USE as it has security implications. _________________ Regards,

Thank you for the answer, but I will take it to implement it, then the PC keyboard is no longer detected in the POST (Power-on Self-Test), and I am trying to restore the BIOS, because I do not have access to the CR2032 battery because the Crystal is sealed and they are not screws that hold the lid glass, so this inconvenience will delay in publishing the log (since the keyboard is no longer detected by the UEFI firmware). This happened after disconnecting it 4 hours ago and connecting it after 2 minutes. _________________ I like everything that is Linux, free and open source software. I am a teenager

UPDATE: After figuring out how to remove the cover and access the battery, I put it back in and the keyboard was detected, although I will be configuring the bios right now, I decided to disable fast boot to avoid future problems.
I will continue with capturing the log and uploading it. _________________ I like everything that is Linux, free and open source software. I am a teenager |

I tried what was suggested, I set the USE wep tkip variable and it detects the extender network, and I was able to connect _________________ I like everything that is Linux, free and open source software. I am a teenager |

ian848uig,
That means that your WiFi tetwork offers WPA security, which is no longer secure.
It should be changed to WPA2 or WPA3 if possible, then you can disable USE=tkip. _________________ Regards,

It is a TP-Link Extender, it is not possible for me to change it in the short term. Also with USE wep I detected the extender, here are some specifications:
Model/Hardware Version: TL-WA850RE v4.0
Firmware Version: 1.0.0 Build 20171218 Rel. 59722.
I also updated the Firmware a long time ago to the latest version available. (You could try OpenWRT as a replacement for the Firmware, but according to the Wiki, its RAM and storage are low)(https://openwrt.org/toh/tp-link/tl-wa850re). so I'll leave it as it is.
And about WPA, I don't have that much concern. In the future I will surely change the extender. (I think it started to have errors a while ago, because sometimes when it is downloading for a long period it disconnects by itself.) _________________ I like everything that is Linux, free and open source software. ian848uig,
As long as you are aware of the security situation and you make an informed decision. Thats all that matters. _________________ Regards,

In the meantime I will try to use some security measure like firewalld and configure Firefox.
I only have to make KDE Plasma and SDDM work, which with my Nvidia GTX 1050 TI refuses to start KDE Plasma.
I will have to open another post to solve the KDE Plasma problem. _________________ I like everything that is Linux, free and open source software. I am a teenager |
