Hi, A::,
I have the following issue.
My ISP cut off service couple of days ago.
I was able to repair it by paying the bill, but since then I losy the Network icon in the GNOME top bar.
Moreover - the Network settings not working properly.
When I open the "Settings" and go to "Network" it shows an error "Exclamation mar" and the following is displayed:

However this is not true, as I am posting this message from that machine.
Whats more - I can ping google.com, but I can't ping 8.8.8.8.
Could someone please help?

As you can see I do have an IP and can access the Web. But I can't do anything IP related.

Then you have reached google.com via IPv6 ... and your IPv4 does not work. Have you set your IPv4 address (192.168.1.233) static or do you get it via DHCP. Can you ping your own router (maybe: 192.168.1.1?) If this works, then your IPv4 problem to 8.8.8.8 is caused either by your ISP or wrong settings in your router.

Yes, it looks like I can ping the router.
I called the ISP (Comcast) and they said that everything i set up properly.
What parameters in the modem should I check?
Also - I'd like to see that icon for the Internet access on top of the screen.

Hi,
More info:
Gor the test I set the FW on the modem to be "Minimal Security (Low)".
And I was able to access github.
However when the FW is on the "Highest: - only Windows/OSX can access it.
I don't understand this.
I don't have a FW turned on on my machine on Gentoo.
Anything else I can do to debug it?
And I do need the Network Icon in GNOME...

Hi,
This laptop does not have a wired connection.
When I installed the OS - everything worked and I used DHCP to connect.
Initially it had Wayland with GNOME, but because it has touch screen and Wayland right now has issues I went to update it and put X11.
It was working fine, but then the service was off.
When the service turned back on I lost the icon and the signal was come-and-go.
I got new modem from Comcast, but it didn't help. I can browse, windows and OSX works, but not this laptop with Gentoo.

So what is the way forward?
If I remove it - I'm sure something else will break.
But if I keep it - I will not have an idea whether the network is operational or not..

P.P.S.: the icon I'm talking about is the little network icon which is located in the top right corner of the GNOME screen (looks like 3 little machines connected with wires). I don't think its a NetworkManager" icon - I believe it is a basic network status icon. |

That is not good. If you really did not read, nor did what those news items are telling, than you have and will have a lot of problems....
Since you have installed networkmanager you should use it. Click on it to manger your active connections and a right click gives advanced menu. If you have a manual IP setup you can manage it there. DHCP, too.

Hi,
That installation was not intentional. It was pulled in by the default USE-flags/dependency.
But I guess I should switch to it, right?
And I don't know what icon you are talking about.
I don't have a static IP - DHCP is used.

Hi,
I checked the page here.
Had to rebuild the kernel, because some options were not turned on.
After rebuilding and re-installing the kernel and then rebooting, I lost the network acces. My "wlan0" service doesn't want to start anymore.
I added the option to turn off the predictable network names and its still not starting.
Anyone knows what could be the issue?

P.S.:
This is what I see during boot:

Hi,
So, after looking at dmesg and leaving the laptop for a day I have a following conclusions:
First and foremost:
This laptop have a touch screen.
Initially it has Wayland along with GNOME. However Wayland experienced erratic mouse bhaviour, where the mouse was moving by itself without me moving it or even touching it.
So I decided to put X on it.
Everything ws working fine until this issue with NetworkManager hit.
Meaning that after rebuilding the kernel according to the guidelines and removing dhcpcd, the mouse erratic behavior is back.
I tried to go back to the old kernel (make menuconfig saved the old config, so I just renamed it), but this behavior staill happened.
Second:
I looked at the dmesg output. There is nothing explicitly wrong there. No, errors reported, except the issue with cfg80211 functions not being found. I will post this log tomorrow for you to review.
But because of the issue 1, I think I will have to remove NetworkManager and go back to basic dhcpcd.
