Hi, A::,
I have the following issue.

My ISP cut off service couple of days ago.

I was able to repair it by paying the bill, but since then I losy the Network icon in the GNOME top bar.

Moreover - the Network settings not working properly.
When I open the "Settings" and go to "Network" it shows an error "Exclamation mar" and the following is displayed:

Quote:

Network Unavailable
An error has occurred and network cannot be used.
Error details: Network Manager is not running

However this is not true, as I am posting this message from that machine.

Whats more - I can ping google.com, but I can't ping 8.8.8.8.

Could someone please help?

Code:

igor@WaylandGnome ~ $ ifconfig

As you can see I do have an IP and can access the Web. But I can't do anything IP related.

Thank you.

Then you have reached google.com via IPv6 ... and your IPv4 does not work. Have you set your IPv4 address (192.168.1.233) static or do you get it via DHCP. Can you ping your own router (maybe: 192.168.1.1?) If this works, then your IPv4 problem to 8.8.8.8 is caused either by your ISP or wrong settings in your router.

Yes, it looks like I can ping the router.

I called the ISP (Comcast) and they said that everything i set up properly.

What parameters in the modem should I check?

Also - I'd like to see that icon for the Internet access on top of the screen.

Thank you.

Hi,
Now this is done on my MAC:

Code:

Igors-MacBook-Air:dbhandler igorkorot$ ping -c 3 google.com
PING google.com (142.250.105.113): 56 data bytes

PING 8.8.8.8 (8.8.8.8): 56 data bytes
Request timeout for icmp_seq 0
Request timeout for icmp_seq 1

--- 8.8.8.8 ping statistics ---
3 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100.0% packet loss
Igors-MacBook-Air:dbhandler igorkorot$ ping -c 3 192.168.1.1
PING 192.168.1.1 (192.168.1.1): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_seq=0 ttl=64 time=12.030 ms

--- 192.168.1.1 ping statistics ---
3 packets transmitted, 3 packets received, 0.0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 4.666/9.124/12.030/3.200 ms
Igors-MacBook-Air:dbhandler igorkorot$

AS you can see everything works.

And also everything works on Windows.

Thank you.

P.S.: The reason I'm looking into this is because while I can access GitHub from Windows and Mac, I can't do that from my Linux Gentoo box. And of course I need the Network Icon in GNOME...

Hi,
More info:

Gor the test I set the FW on the modem to be "Minimal Security (Low)".
And I was able to access github.

However when the FW is on the "Highest: - only Windows/OSX can access it.

I don't understand this.
I don't have a FW turned on on my machine on Gentoo.

Anything else I can do to debug it?
And I do need the Network Icon in GNOME...

Thank you.

Hi,
This laptop does not have a wired connection.
When I installed the OS - everything worked and I used DHCP to connect.
Initially it had Wayland with GNOME, but because it has touch screen and Wayland right now has issues I went to update it and put X11.
It was working fine, but then the service was off.
When the service turned back on I lost the icon and the signal was come-and-go.
I got new modem from Comcast, but it didn't help. I can browse, windows and OSX works, but not this laptop with Gentoo.

Thank you.

Then, you should invest some reading time into https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Network_management.
Since you use the "icon" within gnome, I tend that this "icon" is the https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/NetworkManager

Quote:
NetworkManager and other network management services typically do not work together. That includes a standalone instances of dhcpcd and Gentoo's default netifrc scripts. Be sure only one network management service is running at a time. Adding more than one network management service will lead to unpredictable results!

This not a warning for not using network manager, but rather make sure not tu mix things. Maybe this is the case here.

Hi,
I guess that update picked up the NetworkManager among other things:

Code:

igor@WaylandGnome ~/wxFork $ emerge -pv networkmanager
 * Last emerge --sync was 77d 14h 57m 31s ago.

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
Dependency resolution took 39.00 s (backtrack: 0/20).

[ebuild   R    ] net-misc/networkmanager-1.42.6-r2::gentoo  USE="concheck elogind gtk-doc introspection modemmanager nss policykit ppp tools wext wifi -audit -bluetooth -connection-sharing -debug -dhclient -dhcpcd -gnutls -iptables -iwd -libedit -nftables -ofono -ovs -psl -resolvconf (-selinux) -syslog -systemd -teamd -test -vala" ABI_X86="(64) -32 (-x32)" 0 KiB

Total: 1 package (1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 0 KiB

 * IMPORTANT: 23 news items need reading for repository 'gentoo'.
 * Use eselect news read to view new items.

igor@WaylandGnome ~/wxFork $

;-)

So what is the way forward?

If I remove it - I'm sure something else will break.
But if I keep it - I will not have an idea whether the network is operational or not..

I guess I can check what pulled it in and see what is needed...

Thank you.

EDIT:

Code:

WaylandGnome /home/igor/wxFork # equery d networkmanager
 * These packages depend on networkmanager:
app-misc/tracker-miners-3.6.2 (networkmanager ? net-misc/networkmanager)
gnome-base/gnome-control-center-45.2 (networkmanager ? >=net-misc/networkmanager-1.24.0[modemmanager])

                          (vala ? net-misc/networkmanager[vala])
www-client/firefox-115.9.0 (kernel_linux ? net-misc/networkmanager)
WaylandGnome /home/igor/wxFork #

which means I can't remove it - too much depends on it, including some GNOME packages.

I tried this:

Code:

WaylandGnome /home/igor/wxFork # USE="-networkmanager" emerge -pvuDN @world
 * Last emerge --sync was 77d 15h 23m 29s ago.

 * IMPORTANT: config file '/etc/portage/package.use/zz-autounmask' needs updating.
 * See the CONFIGURATION FILES and CONFIGURATION FILES UPDATE TOOLS
 * sections of the emerge man page to learn how to update config files.

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

 * IMPORTANT: 23 news items need reading for repository 'gentoo'.
 * Use eselect news read to view new items.

so not everything will be rebuilt.

P.P.S.: the icon I'm talking about is the little network icon which is located in the top right corner of the GNOME screen (looks like 3 little machines connected with wires). I don't think its a NetworkManager" icon - I believe it is a basic network status icon.

That is not good. If you really did not read, nor did what those news items are telling, than you have and will have a lot of problems....

Since you have installed networkmanager you should use it. Click on it to manger your active connections and a right click gives advanced menu. If you have a manual IP setup you can manage it there. DHCP, too.

Hi,
That installation was not intentional. It was pulled in by the default USE-flags/dependency.

But I guess I should switch to it, right?

And I don't know what icon you are talking about.

I don't have a static IP - DHCP is used.

Thank you.

P.S. I will try to go thru those news...

Hi,
I presume I should remove the dhcpcd daemon, since it will be NM who will handle it, right?

Thank you.

Hi,
I checked the page here.

Had to rebuild the kernel, because some options were not turned on.

After rebuilding and re-installing the kernel and then rebooting, I lost the network acces. My "wlan0" service doesn't want to start anymore.

I added the option to turn off the predictable network names and its still not starting.

Anyone knows what could be the issue?

Thank you.

P.S.:

This is what I see during boot:

Code:

Bringing up interface wlan0
    Caching network module dependencies
ERROR: interface wlan0 does not exist
Ensure you have loded the correct kernel module for your hardware
ERROR: net,wlan0 failed to start
ERROR: cannot start netmount as net.wlan0 would not start

However, I do have a "net.wlan0" link inside /etc/init.d.

Any idea what is going on?

Thank you.

The icon you mentioned:

Well, that it sound you do use https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Netifrc
So you should get rid of https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/NetworkManager and make sure only one solution is present. Then follow the https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Netifrc guide.

can you provide the complete output of dmesg

Hi,
So, after looking at dmesg and leaving the laptop for a day I have a following conclusions:

First and foremost:

This laptop have a touch screen.
Initially it has Wayland along with GNOME. However Wayland experienced erratic mouse bhaviour, where the mouse was moving by itself without me moving it or even touching it.

So I decided to put X on it.
Everything ws working fine until this issue with NetworkManager hit.
Meaning that after rebuilding the kernel according to the guidelines and removing dhcpcd, the mouse erratic behavior is back.
I tried to go back to the old kernel (make menuconfig saved the old config, so I just renamed it), but this behavior staill happened.

Second:

I looked at the dmesg output. There is nothing explicitly wrong there. No, errors reported, except the issue with cfg80211 functions not being found. I will post this log tomorrow for you to review.

But because of the issue 1, I think I will have to remove NetworkManager and go back to basic dhcpcd.

Thank you.

And this is maybe the reason why the mouse behaves erratic?

In dmesg you should see the interface names and maybe a rename, thus the problem with the init

Banana,

maybe you have searched for this:
Code:
[    5.965424] cfg80211: Unknown symbol iwe_stream_add_value (err -2)
[    5.965439] cfg80211: Unknown symbol iwe_stream_add_event (err -2)
[    5.965545] cfg80211: Unknown symbol wireless_nlevent_flush (err -2)
[    5.965601] cfg80211: Unknown symbol wireless_send_event (err -2)
[    5.965625] cfg80211: Unknown symbol iwe_stream_add_point (err -2)

This looks to me that the kernel .config was edited instead doing a "make menuconfig" ...

(see more here: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/User:Pietinger/Tutorials/Manual_kernel_configuration#Never_edit_.config )

If this was working before some kernel config is now missing or wrong.
The lspci output tells, that you need to configure https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Iwlwifi

It should be supported: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000005511/wireless.html
there should be no need to use the intel provided drivers. They should be already included in the firmware package.

Thank you.
Currently I'm out of ideas other than check out the wiki https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Iwlwifi There are also troubleshooting steps.

I not have wlan hardware with gentoo right now.
